Best Non Ape Role for Roddy McDowall?

Seeing as it's his 82nd birthdytoday and I just finished a piece about him, I thought I'd ask what you thought was McDowall's better genre roles other than POTA.

The guy appeared in so much it's hard to choose, personally I liked him as Jonathan Willoway on Fantastic Journey.

I agree. He has been in so much, it's hard to say which is truly the best before or after his POTA days. But I have to say the one role I have enjoyed the most (beyond his ape parts) is as Peter Vincent in Fright Night. He was just so charming in that role, it's hard to imagine anyone else trying to take it on in a remake.

I like him in the Columbo episode Short Fuse ... Roddy was the killer

Also, I like the horror movie he played in where the painting came alive and kept moving (I forgot the name) ... It was a painting of a grave.

Also, the one where he was a Museum curator and the statue came alive.

Is that the one where he has the total melt down in the cable car?

Being a Batman nerd I have to mention his great voice work as Mad Hatter on BTAS, especially in the episode "Perchance to Dream".

He was also the Bookworm on the 60s TV series. Bookworm was my favorite "made-up" villain for the series. McDowall actually seemed quite dangerous and completely detached from any reality other than his own.

I love Bookworm, he played kind of borderline psychotic.

"How Green Was My Valley"-- Directed by four time oscar winner, John Ford.

This was a sign of things to come for Roddy. Even at that young, tender age, you saw the acting phenom that was to be.

It's all in his EYES. The man had the most expressive eyes and face I've ever seen on an actor.

Happy Birthday Roddy, wherever you are. You are, and always will be missed.
