Damn! I didn't know they ceased publication:

ICv2 - Starlog Ends Long Run

A few years ago there was an accident in the Starlog warehouse out west. All back issues, movie tie-ins, poster mags and specials were destroyed:

Blog@Newsarama s back issues burn in warehouse fire

And there's the insurance scam theory:

Starlog was always my favourite SF magazine. It was a real shame when it went under.

Yep, like most of us here, we were with it from issue #1.. My biggest disappointment in life was the cancellation announcement of Space:1999 in issue #6, the same issue to report on a new film being filmed in Tunisia called.. 'Star Wars'.

I remember initially thinking it was a pretty corny title for a sci-fi film...

Anywho, I still have my first 12 stored away. They're awesome!

Starlog was to me what Famous Monsters was to the baby boomer kids, I only stopped reading in the learly 1990s when my interests changed (reading more psychotronic) and it's trek focus got bothersome for me.

I looked up Starlog on Wikipedia and only Kerry O'Quinn from it's early days has a thread. Apparently he is now writing/producing/direction horror films with titles that have a gay slant to them. Has he come out of the closet?

Kerry O'Quinn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kerry O'Quinn is a writer, magazine publisher, director and producer, most noted for the creation of Starlog, Fangoria, Cinemagic, Future Life and Comics Scene magazines.

                Career

O'Quinn produced the Star Trek 20th Anniversary Convention, the Star Wars 10th Anniversary Convention, and the Starlog 20th Anniversary Convention.
In 2009 was an Award named after him, the O’Quinn Award.

                Personal life

O'Quinn currently lives in Los Angeles, California.

Ditto.. I stopped reading the mag after my first year in college ('82).. It just started getting into more fantasy, ET (which I never had an interest in seeing..) and movies I frankly had no interest in. I'll always cherish my original collection of the first 12.

Yeah, I probably stopped buying it monthly around '84-'85 because of it becoming somewhat "Flavour of the month" with new properties. I'd buy it occasionally after that but I doubt I bought an issue after '89. It pretty much became the Star Trek TNG magazine.

that's probably around when I stopped buying it too. you are right it was all about Trek at that point...with maybe the occasional xfiles or some such as those shows started airing in the early 90's.
I still have afew that highlighted Star Wars....the opening of Star Tours and the10th Anniversary of A New Hope

That SW 10th Anniversary issue is great. A really good article about the Marvel SW comics in that one.

I grew up with it. Only bought two issues of Fangoria my whole life.

It was my "tiger beat " through High School. I think I stopped picking it up regularlly after teh second season of STTNG.

SCI FI got popular and when too many folks come in It's uncool anymore.

I cut most of mine up for scrapbooks for my "morgue" and teh rest I gave to some neighborhood kids.

What is WONDERFUL about those old early issues is they were 1/3 movies 1/3 ficton 1/3 ACtual space exploration.

you 12 issue guys should have stuck around until at least issue #19 because of this wonderful work of art gracing the cover

"What motivated him to throw a puppy at the Hells Angels is currently unclear,"

Starroid Raiders Dagon wrote "No Dime Store Monster left behind"
