In this thread so far...I counted 12 posters who either like, love, or even think it's the best Trek movie...and only 5 who either dislike it...or say it was so-so.
The Mego Museum is the final word on this...and the verdict is the Motion Picture is right up there on top of the Trek world list...and therefore it rules.

I don't hate the movie but I have to watch it in like 3 sittings. I love when they fly around the Enterprise and show it off in all its awesome glory. I also love when McKoy first comes back aboard. Otherwise, I feel the movie to be a little cold and emotionless and lacking the heart that the original series possessed. However it made a lot of money and allowed for Star Trek 2 to be made...which is my favorite.
I'd probably put the Motion Picture near the bottom of my list. Star Trek 5 being the actual bottom.Comment

That movie always brings back memories of happy meals, trading cards, action figures and that great marvel comic series (well, I like it). The movie itself bored my socks off as a kid but I'm fond of it as an adult, it rests somewhere in the top five Star Trek movies for me.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

I haven't seen it in years. I should try the director's cut. I found it far too cerebral and boring (much like "The Cage" was interpreted by the networks, and how TNG could often times be). Shatner's subdued Kirk didn't seem much like Kirk to me. Not bombastic enough. But then, on the other hand, in Generations they had him acting like Mr. Flamboyant half of the time.

The thing with TMP it's a 45 minute stort stretched out to 2+ hours and the filler is endless cloud scenes.
At least if there was more character development it would have been way more watchable...
I want to know what Scotty, Sulu, Chevok and Uhura's been up to for the last 10 years -- Instead we get enough cloud shots to last a lifetime.
As a Trek fan I love TMP ....
But looking at it from a distance it's pretty horrible .. and almost impossible to market to children.Comment

What's up with this children thing?
I don't care if the little monsters hate it...I love it...
You don't have kids of your own, do you? Neither do I...therefore...we shouldn't care if it hurts kids' feelings...
P.S. Forgive this post...it was the evil Hector from Mirror, Mirror...yes...he's a pretty bad fella...

If you look beyond the reuse of the Nomad/Doomsday Machine themes, you will see that this film is actually about Mr. Spock coming to terms with his human half. I consider that an important Star Trek event.Comment

As Spock would say in the era of Star Wars it's only logical to make the movie kid friendly (which means not overly boring).
There was thousands of items (including Megos) marketed to kids from that movie but the movie's failure to connect with kids ruined a big chunk of what might have been.
You might love movie -- I do too ... But it could have been a LOT better.Comment

TMP is definately my favorite Star Trek film. To me, it felt like a true science fiction film instead of a science fantasy film ... much like 2001 and Silent Running. I liked that they incorporated things like worm holes and such, even though I didn't understand half of it then. And that V'ger was actually Voyager.
It was also great that the Klingons looked alien for the first time.Comment
