Caught a bit of this on cable this morning. I saw it in the theater when it came out, and as I recall, it wasn't great but also wasn't awful. Think about it: a 1951 book made into a SF actioner 40 years later, in the age of Star Wars and Alien.
It could have been better, sure, but it wasn't a total failure.
I wouldn't mind seeing someone with vision and talent attempt a remake, or new adaptation of the novel.
