Star Trek Things that make you go Hmmm

I was just thinking the other day of all the missed opportunities later trek shows missed by not following up on some of the great classic Trek story lines.

Did you ever think of this? The Federation thought the Bajoran Wormhole was pretty spiffy. But the Federation was sitting on one thing that would solve every single Trek plot in like 5 mins.

Klingons kill Kirks son, no problem. Simply leave and visit the guardian of Forever. A portal to any where in time and space. Show up a few minutes before he's killed and zap the Klingons. Wait why not go all the way back and stop Khan in the Space seed incident and eliminate the whole thing?

Hell this had tons of possibilities and the only follow up was one animated series?

What about Gary7s space police? What happened to the Excabbians, wouldnt it be great to see Space Lincoln show up during the next Generation?

What would a starship of violent space going Romans look like? Space Nazis ?

    Hmmmm.

The comic book series did try to follow up on some good things like the trial of James Kirk story arc.

Bella Oxnix Shows up in court to give Kirk his share of the "Cut" from GAngster world and gives McCoy back his communicator.

We see what happened to the kid McCoy delivered and the Queen lady names after him and Kirk. Stuff like that was cool in my oppinion.

Was just watching that one the other day and found a plot hole.
They make it look like Gary Seven MUST destroy the rocket -- and if he don't WW3 will happen.

Why didn't Kirk at least consider shooting it with the Enterprise phasers ?
The primative 60's Earthlings wouldn't have noticed the difference anyway.

        >Simply leave and visit the guardian of Forever.

One of the fan series sort of dealt with this; and pointed out that there are a few of these things all over the universe. Trek time travel is kind of an anomaly: it’s there, it’s pretty easy, but nobody uses it.... until the 29th century when the Feds mobilize a dedicated time police sort of group.

        >What would a starship of violent space going Romans look like? Space Nazis ?

I think Trek suffered ‘cos each successive group of producers tried REALLY HARD to erase everything they thought was stupid from previous shows. Space Nazis went away since they’re passe. Parallels to ancient Earth cultures went away as being improbable. Sad; since stuff like that can be taken as cheap film making, OR demonstrative that what we know as “Roman” is some sort of universal constant. (Which makes sense, given the Trek mythos’ addition of “The Preservers.”) History had to change ‘cos Klingons are KEWEL and need to be in EVERY series.... even the prequels!

I think we should just have a thread on how we think the guardian of forever could solve all of the movies, Next Gen, DS9 and Voyagers problems.

They should have referenced Gary 7s people somewhere in the Time war or future federation time police story arcs.

I always wondered why they couldn't fix everything with the transporter - Oh look, ensign Chekov just got phasered in the gut, so just beam him up and have the transporter correct the damage back to his original pattern.

They just weren't thinking that far ahead. Story arcs were unheard of in the classic series. The Naked Time and Tommorow is Yesterday was supposed to be a 2-parter. Berman frowned upon them in the Next gen & spin-off series even tho some occasionally got made & slipped by. Ron Moore says Trek chokes on it's continuity but in fact it thrives on it if you know how to use it to your benefit.

You get the return of semi-villains like Harry Mudd & Cyrano Jones, ( ST-Animated for Cyrano). I think in The Making of Star Trek they said Capt. Koloth was supposed to return as a regular foil for Kirk & the Enterprise but they couldn't get the same actor to come back and play him again. The other thing is Rodenberry like to put his thumb in people's eyes. His policy was if we used a character or a race don't use them again-invent a new one. So when Next Gen started Worf was an afterthought. The Ferengi were the new villains, (ugh), and he even tried to prevent Nick Meyer from bringing Saavik back in Star Trek VI, (Kirstie Alley was not available anyway to reprise the role). Tho Rodenberry had no trouble re-writing The Naked Time as The Naked Now for Next Gen and not paying the original writer anything for it.

Saavik didn't come back in Star Trek 6 she came back in Star Trek 3 and was played by Robin Curtis, the character in Star Trek 6 was a diffrent vulcan called Valeris played by Kim Cattrall

didn't they do another follow up to the piece of the action in the comics, when marvel did the Star Trek comics, I remeber the classic series they did that followed on from the Slow Motion Picture where the went back to ioasha(sorry about the spelling) and the world was now divided into red shirts yellow shirts and blue shirts and they all had the classic trek "heaters" and communicators

True, BUT Meyer & co. originally wrote the part as Saavik, and Roddenberry allegedly threw a fit that they would make one of the "family" characters betray all the others. Meyer said that he thought Roddenberry shouldn't have a say since he (Meyer) created her for STII. But when they couldn't get Alley back for the part, Meyer also wasn't interested in re-casting a third actress in the role, and started re-working her as a new character -- a shame, really, because if you watch STVI and see Valeris as Saavik, the surprise and depth of the betrayal as well as her reasons for doing it have real resonance.

it would have been a nice twist to it, saying that I liked it in the later trek spinoffs where characters would go off and look out for thier own intrests, seven of nine was always pussing the line

Thanks Knight Errand! Darren, check Nick Meyer's Biography, View From The Bridge, next time you're in a bookstore. I think that is the easiest source to find that info. He mentioned it in Starlog interviews and on the DVD's as well. I think.
