am I missing something thinking season 5 is mediocre - at best ?

No idea. There's only been one episode I've liked so far this season.

I think this has been one of the best seasons thus far.

I think what's happening is Matt Smith is portraying The Doctor the way old time fans expect The Doctor to behave. Smith picks up the character where Sylvester McCoy left off and ignores the changes Eccleston and Tennant brought to the show. He's more professorly, more aloof than recent Doctors and even dresses more like a Pre-JNT era Doctor might; no flashy costume.

I think a defining moment for him would be in The Vampires of Venice when he sits in the throne room and very innocently asks the female baddie, "Why can't I see you in the mirror?" This is akin to when Tom Baker would face a villain and just ask them a simple question. Or like when William Hartnell stood his ground as people ran and the War Machines kept tumbling down the alley-way. You may have issues with the stories but I think Smith is a restoration of sorts to old-style Who.

Matt's season has some things I like and alot I don't

His Doctor characterization is good, he is zany at times but has compassion ofr the aliens (like Pertwee did)
His basic costume is good (thankfully no ? marks on it and I like the bowtie) but it is becoming a uniform like the JNT era. Jon, Tom and Tennet all had a look but actually wore different clothes week to week. Even hartnell and Troughton mixed up their costumes a bit with accouterments and trouser patterns changes (I'ms sure there were some blue and white shirts but it's so hard to be certain in monochrome) So they need to mix it up a bit or do the Einstein and show a closet full of the costumes with him making a comment that he told albert it was a way to save time or effort
this latests sonic screwdriver is not - nice to see it fail for him in Vincent and the Dr
HATE the new Daleks and the new homo reptilians
He's OK but I really think they need to move away from season long arcs and free up the plot
