Comparing the men playing the characters, Gil Gerard as Buck was basically Captain Kirk with a touch of James Bond (Roger Moore era).

Sam Jones really didn't have any personality ...
The movie was really good, but Jones himself was a pretty bad actor.

I'm gonna take a stab at answering that. He probably has no wings because also in the comic strip Alex Raymond was asked by his newspaper to stop including such characters as Hawkmen & Lionmen, etc., due to controversey surrounding Evolution Theory in America at the time. I read or heard this and it seems to me that if they did that in the comic strip it carried over to the film serial.

If we're talking live action, I prefer Buck Rogers, but the 1979 animated Flash Gordon tops them all in my book.

That cartoon is ten shades of AWESOME.

                Flash, without a second thought.

I never enjoyed the older Buck serials or comics nearly as much as Flash - The way that Crabbe portrayed Flash really worked for me as a kid. I was soaked-in to the special effects - the 'vanish in a puff of smoke' gimmick, the wicked ships and facial make-ups, etc. Also, Sam Jones of course - I was and am so enamored by that film that its SCARY! (I feel 100% the same as Alex Ross does as to the 1979 film - his comments verbalize my thoughts far better than I ever could!)

I also had the Flash Filmation series growing up, and my tattered Mego Flash along with my few Mattel figures. In contrast, to ME at that age, Gil's Buck was just another Tom Selleck or "heartthrob" for my sisters to ogle - in fact, I LOVED the intro to the show and the theme - I used to get INTO the opening credits, but the minute the story began I was outta there!

Remember folks, like Alex said: "You either GET it, or you DONT!"

If anyone cares, here is a great watch, and turn it up loud! lol
(Watch in order please - if you havent seen these, they are a neat way to spend 13 minutes, heh.)

Basically do I like adventure on another planet? or Adventure in the Far flung future?

I think I like Buck better because You cant take a rocket BACK to modern day earth. Good riddence.

I agree 100%. Gil's Buck had more of a personality imo.
