Journey To The Far Side of the Sun - Thread

Was just watching Gerry Anderson's Journey To The Far Side of the Sun last night.
Been a long time since I seen it so it was almost like watching a new movie.

I'm a little suprised the owners of the Twilight Zone didn't try and sue Anderson because the story is close to a Twilight Zone episode.

The music was very haunting and nice.
Speaking of the music, I see so much of Thunderbirds and Space 1999 in the music structor of Journey.

I didn't like some of the extended space scenes probably ment to copy 2001.

    The ending ....
Well, lets just say i'm surprised the movie got made with an an ending like that

Interesting Anderson predicted an almost European Union that had a space agency in line with NASA.
I'll bet in a few years this will really happen.

It was a strange movie .....
You watch the cool model effects and you think you're watching a movie ment for kids --- and then all of a sudden the hero slaps his wife for secretly using birth control pills and telling him he's half a man.
I think one of Journey's problems was it didn't have a specific audience in mind and that's what made it look mixed up and jumbled.

All in all it was good effort from the Anderson's and definitely a prelude to better things to come - aka UFO and Space 1999.

What did you thik of Journey ?

I saw that in the theatre as a kid, it was a weird matinee.

Found the film neat but like a lot of Anderson's stuff a little dry in parts. The slapping the wife around was pretty strange. I liked the downer ending myself.

I have the dvd and watched it awhile back.I loved it myself.I saw it as a kid and hated it,but now as an adult I completely understand it.Its funny how that happens.I also like Space 1999 now,but never liked it as a child.

I'm a Gerry Anderson fan, although I feel his Super-Marionation productions are superior to his live action work. I saw Journey years ago and recently bought the DVD.

I agree that Journey is jumbled, much the same way as UFO is. They're jumbled on a number of different levels. The action sequences are wonderful examples of masterfully executed low budget effects, but the cultural sensibilities are a mix of 1950's macho and 1970's cheese-cake. The smoking, drinking, hard boiled, wife slapping, Tit & Butt camera shots are pretty dated, and seem more like subjects for Plaid Stallion parodies than actual period film pieces.
