Doctor Who: What were the original Silurians like?

I don't really remember these guys from the original series, I'm guessing it's been many decades since they were last seen?

Were they your typical rubber suit monsters back in the day? I'm imagining the make-up fx have improved significantly since then (is the helmet she was wearing a homage to that?).

How do you compare this one to the original series episodes?

They were your typical rubber suit monsters. Anything made today will be superior. The monster's head was actually on top of the actor's head which was it's neck. The first appearance was called Dr Who and the Silurians in case you want to buy it.

I seen some photos of the new ones.
They look like any other typical dull monsters of today.

The old ones had some character.

I hate to say it but the 2010 series is really turning me off to Doctor Who.
It's like anything they do stinks this season.

I agree that the tone is a bit lighter (kiddie) but overall I like the recent series. Btw which Daleks do you like the previous series or classic?

I actually like the 2005-2009 Daleks better than the Classic Series Daleks.
The 2005-2009 ones were like the Classic ones on steriods -- which is good.
The Classic Daleks looked a bit too fragile -- like you could kick them over

The 2010 Daleks arent appealing at all.
They look like kids toys -- which is perfect for the 2010 series -- which seems like a kids show.

The Silurians apeared twice in classic who
Dr WHo and the Silurians (pertwee) and Warriors of the Deep (davison) - which also had the silurian cousins the Sea Devils (who appreared in the pertwee story The Sea devils). All 3 have been available on dvd for years individually and in box sets so the vhs copies are probably really cheap, and iknow netflix has them

frankly the silurians look better in the pertwee era, but the sea devils look bad in both

You're right they look like the MARX dalek toys

I liked the Pertwee era Silurians but the JNT versions were horribly kiddified. The Silurians in this new one are a cousin to the ones seen before, I really like how the Doctor addressed that they shouldn't be called "Silurians" to begin with.

I'm not in love with the new makeup but I love the fact that they've made an appearance as their last one was truly worthy of Ed Wood.

I'm very happy with the new season, Moffat has injected some interesting ideas back into the Tardis, the Rory/Amy thing is bloody refreshing and I think Smith is doing a great job. When the Silurian said to him "I'm willing to die for my race, what are you prepared to do?" he just walked away, other Doctors would have gone on a long rant.

The Doctor no longer has a race to die for. Besides that The Doctor is responsible for the destruction of the Time Lords to begin with.

I was really disappointed with the new look silurians, once the mask was removed, where has their 3rd eye gone?
They look more like a cross between silurians and sea devils to me ( even down to the mesh on the costume ). There's even a little Bossk in there with the mask on.

I'm not a fan of the look but I am of the concept that there are different kinds of Silurians. One of my pet peeves is how homogenus every alien race looks yet human beings are completely diverse.

I just watched Doctor Who confidential, which had clips of the Silurians from the original show. I don't think I'd have enough of a nostalgic blindspot to be able watch those original shows and completely overlook the zipper in the front of the monster suit.

The make-up artists interviewed on Confidential actually noted that their Lighter prosthetic in the front actually allows the actor to retain their own face and give these versions of the Silurians each a more individual look than the originals.

Example ..... When I watch classic Doctor Who I feel like i'm watching a stage play ... Most stage plays (even today) have bad SFX and costumes... Going into classic Who with this mindset prepares you for lousy costumes and makes them forgivable and easier to watch - and enjoy.

I think the best stage shows are the ones that create their own "reailty" (or "unreality").

For example, I just watched an excellent production of Frankenstein with the sets and costumes constructed of paper. It took a while into the first act, but the consistency of that world they created was what drew me in.

On the other hand, more often than not, you often see things played for camp... such as the "Monsters" in staged versions Little Shop of Horrors or Rocky Horror.

The problem for me watching the old Doctor Who, particularly those that are shot on location on Planet Earth is the rubber monster walking down a regular street in London. Although you are right, it usually works better for me when they are standing on the wobbly "alien" sets. It's fun, but I'm never really immersed in the experience like I am with the new one.

I'm a child of the ILM and Stan Winston eras of film-making, so I guess I have certain standards for SFX on film and TV to be able to take it seriously.

I'm ashamed to admit, I never seen Red Dwarf ... not even once.

I don't remember my local PBS station ever playing it ... and if they did I missed it.
