It didn't need to be, and the show was still entertaining and classic..
And while that worked for the most part because the Doctor was often older or as it's been well put awkward (totally agree on the Tom Baker thing). It fell flat in the Davison years where he's got a gang of young people that look up to him yet none of them develop any sort of feelings? Even unrequited? I find that more unbelievable than the Tardis.

The best relationship in the classic, IMO was Doctor/Ace, while not romantic, it had more depth and realism than 90% of it's predecessors.

I don't think this sort of character "reduces" anything, I'd only think it did if he hopped into bed with them or did something out of character. This current Doctor might be the least "lovey dovey" we've seen in a long time.

Tom went the other way on purpose he acted his doctor akward toward women to specifically allow him to feel alien to the crowd and keep the murmers quiet

I find the stories have improved dramatically, the "deus ex machina" factor of the RTD era is down by 50%.

Someone just pointed out an Easter Egg to me.

In the forest, as The Doctor leaves with the Bishop and River, he's missing the jacket that the angels grabbed from him. A moment later when he's talking to Amy... he's wearing his jacket and talking about the crack in the wall and how important it is that she remembers what he told her when she was seven... then kisses her tenderly on the forehead. When we next see him wandering through the forest with River and the Bishop, he's again missing his jacket.

A sighting of a Doctor from a Future episode!

Looks like a bit of a reprise of the Mickey/Rose/Doctor triangle with Amy's fiance becoming a companion.

Don't click on this link if you don't want to see Doctor and his companion doing the naughty.

Yes. Please respect my religious beliefs.

I don't need every series I watch to be Sex and the City.
It's not that I don't like sex, I enjoy it very much, but I'm fed up with this "sexual tension" between Doctors and Companions.
Except for the sublime Donna Noble, all other companions went gaga-eyed for the Doc. Sure, in this case it's more lust, but I wish they'd just focus on the story, and not on pleasing the Twilight crowd.
I think it's just boring, and I don't need to see the sex life of the Doctor graphically explored.
I also watched Star Trek for the aliens and spaceships, not for Captain Kirk's love life.

I just watched a clip of that scene on youtube.

To me, it reminded me more of Classic Who rather than the RTD era.

If that was David Tennant he would have kissed her back

Probably not in "love" with her fiance. I hope she doesn't get married.
