I think he's a bit on the pretentious side...and some of his movies reflect that...like Once Upon A Time In Mexico...with yet another pretentious entity...Antonio Banderas.
But...like you said...this reboot of the Predator series...does look good...it obviously has a bigger budget...I mean...you have Oscar winner Adrien Brody...and other top actors like Laurence Fishburne.
To have an Oscar winner like Brody to commit to this type of flick...speaks volumes...very promising.
Plus pretentious or not...Rodriguez does have a knack for action-oriented movies...this is so right up his alley.
Heck yeah, go predators go, tear up those silly humans.
"Steel-like jaws clacked away, each bite slashing flesh from my body - I used my knife and my hands, and when they were gone, my bloody stumps - and yet the turtles came."
We got the mini featurette at work. Didn't think this was suppose to be posted yet online. But everything leaks.
Looks great and so does the new look of the predators and their beasts.
I'm there too.
I'm hot and cold on director Robert Rodriguez. I think he's a bit on the pretentious side...and some of his movies reflect that.
I'm right there with you on that, Hec. However, Rodriguez did not direct Predators, he only produced it, which actually could be even worse. It was directed by the filmmaker who did "Armored", Nimrod Antal.
Rodriguez's original idea for the film was interesting... As a matter of fact, I remember sitting in this little bar with him and Harry Knowles in Austin Texas, talking about my little Batman thing, and he told me all about his idea for Predator 3. However I heard from my friends that worked on it, and someone I know at Fox, that "Predators" kind of evolved a bit and became a much bigger movie. Rodriguez used to be really inspiring to me and a great guy, but then he got complacent and comfortable. In my opinion, his films have suffered greatly because of this.
The movie looks ok, but it's never going to top the original, or even come close. Kevin Peter Hall was just pure movie magic in that suit, and it will never be done any better. EVER, so I'm going into "Predators" with low expectations... Look on the bright side; It CAN'T be any worse than AVP or AVP requiem, can it?

I haven't liked anything relating to Predator since the first one, mostly because it's such an ensemble piece, the alien is neat but it's just one part of a fun movie IMO.
What I like about this is it's trying to replicate that formula again, interesting characters being hunted, it could work.
