I'd always assumed that the apes had been modified to make for better pets. That's why the chimps are about three times too big, the apes half too small and the orangutans didn't have big red butts.
The biggest reason that the apes have the differences you mentioned above: They had human actors in the roles, so naturally there's going to be size differences... And WEREWOLF was right when he stated that chimps can get up to 5.5 feet tall, so people have to take that into consideration when saying how small the chimps should be...
I also get a kick that some of you are separating apes from chimps...lol.
Chimps are apes.
Yes, you are correct, I should have said chimps and gorillas. The word apes was just stuck in my head because of the movie title.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
The Burton Apes wasn't all bad. The apes being descendants of genetically altered test pilots made a lot more sense than the pets from the original movies. Plus Rick Bakers make up effects were insanely good.

Yeah, it wasn't going to win any academy awards, but it was cool to see a reimagining of the Apes story. When I heard who was directing it I feared the worst. But it wasn't that bad. Not that I have watched it more than twice, while I watch all 5 original movies and the TV series at least once a year.

True...but Burton's General Thade as the main baddie...is more dead on...than the gorilla generals of the original POTA films.
Chimps are just more aggressive and violent than gorillas.
Yes, but would they be in a future where roles are reversed? While what you're saying is true in reality, in a fictional future, maybe the "role reversal" extended in a sense to the apes as well... The chimps ended up evolving into polar opposites of their original nature (from aggressive meat eaters into peaceful, pacifistic vegetarian simians) and while the gorillas may have gained intelligence, their personas may have "devolved" into aggressors...
