Gold Key Star Trek comics what was with Spock's eyebrows

I am just wondering the how and why they decided to draw the curled over the side look of Spock's slanted eyebrows. It persisted even after Trek had it's mainstream popularity and Alberto Giolitte started to make the drawings more screen accurate.

And, in case you haven't noticed, the curled over brow even made it's way to the Mego Star Trek card

I have several of the Star Trek Gold Key comics, and Falcon even gave me a treasury book of them for Christmas.

Cut the bangs a little shorter and that's Spock in the The Cage. Don't cut the bangs, and it's him in Where No Man Has Gone Before.

The artist doing the comic was based in Rome and had little in the way of reference material for doing the art work. It appears he was working from a set of publicity photos.

In most of the issues there is at least one drawing that appears to be made from this publicity photo of Spock used for issue one.

I've taken to calling it a "Beaker Spock" because Spock was holding a beaker in that photo.

The art is pretty blah but they do have a real cool appeal to them for me anyway.
I picked up all three trades(the series in three volumes) for $5 each from my comic shop about three years ago.
I do have several in my collection but these ones I can flip through often and not feel bad about it.
What drives me crazy though is the flames shooting out the enterprises nacelles as it warps through space...LOL

I always thought it was eyebrow merging into shadow line and that it wasn't really his eyebrow curling all the way down. I've always dug the art for these since they are so screen inaccurate.
              It's all good!

Never saw those before. When I first looked at it, I thought that was the artist's way of portraying the meat of the eyelid.

Havent seen that publicity shot before. A round collar and Nimoys hair is messy! Funny!

I always liked the Gold Key Trek stuff as a kid but inevitably I wondered about the lack of consistency with the show. Some time later I read that the main artist had never seen the show, or at least had little to go on. I just said "Ah, now I get it."
