    Alien 3 Special Edition

Bought the 9 disc Alien quadrilogy cheap and thought that I would give David Fincher's Alien 3 Special edition a go the other night. Like most, i thought Alien 3 was a low key affair, terrible special effects, why was everyone British? and well .. a limp follow up to Cameron's gung ho Aliens. Maybe because there's been a lot of water under the bridge since I last watched Alien 3, but this re edited version is alright, makes a lot more sense and is a completely different film. Has anyone else watch this version?

I like the film the more I see it.
I know, it's slow, no Colonial Marines, just the one alien.
But that's what makes it different. It's dark and moody. You know it's not going to end well from scene one. Fincher had no trouble killing off favourites like Hicks and Newt.
I wish this one would have been the last one with Ripley. The ending made sense.

And to really stir things up: I liked Alien Resurrection, too, with the exception of the dumb Newborn. I usually watch that movie and stop when the ugly duckling shows up.

I don't think there's any way they can edit it to make me like it.

The whole movie was such a downer on all levels there's nothing in there that can save it.

I am waiting patiently for a Blu-ray set to re-watch all 4 in one weekend. I liked all 4 movies very much, although I liked each sequel a little less than the previous movie. (Yes, I am one of the few who thinks Alien is superior to Aliens)

I hated the original Aliens 3. I don't think anything could save it.

I love the third movie. Thought it clever. A nice contrast to the others. I'm not sure why people are so down on it. I would probably watch a re-edit, but don't think it's needed, made sense fine to me as it was.

I think Roger Ebert nailed it when he said something like "It's one of the most well made bad movies I've ever seen". I enjoy aspects of the movie and I think it's put together with great flair and I love the score but as a whole, it's just an exercise in "How grim and depressing can we make this?"

As for the extended cut, I think it's much better than the theatrical version.

But there is just no getting around the fact that the nihilism is so thick in Alien 3 that it almost becomes funny.

I mean, killing Newt off wasn't enough, they had to make sure to show us her autopsy and crack her chest open to make sure she didn't have an alien.

It was a SERIOUS let down after reading the awesome Aliens dark Horse comics that picked up after Aliens.

Yeah...and killing off Hicks pi$$ed me off as well. I loved his character. I wish Ridley Scott had directed the 3rd one.
