Star Trek II - Chekov stinks at scanning

I'm am sure someone has realized this before, but watching Trek today, I just realized that in order for the crew of the Reliant to not know that Ceti Alpha 6 was gone and that there was a planet missing, Chekov, the science officer, would have had to have ignored scanning the solar system when they came into range (like they do in a lot of episodes). So the whole course of events in the movie is Chekov's fault.
    It's all good!

Russians invented "not scanning". Seriously though, I always wondered how they didn't notice A MISSING PLANET!

"Captain, we have nuked our enemies on Mars, the blue planet."
"Chekov, you do mean the red planet?!"
      "Boshe moi! I'm also colourblind...."

no you have it all wrong. they knew a planet had blown up, they just were wrong about which planet. Ceti 6 blew up but they though it was 5 because the explosion caused 5 to shift out of it's orbit. that is why ceti 5 is a wasteland when they beam down.
