It was very good on a whole and a cool send off for the 10th Doc. An old character from the old days is revealed as well, which was surprising and a nice nod to the old series. Matt Smith looks like he's going to be great as the next Doc, judging by this trailer:
BBC - Doctor Who - New Years Day

SPOILERS!!!!!!
SPOILERS!!!!!!
Can I be frank?
Another very sloppy story by RTD.
Man, he's just slapping it together, isn't he?
Here we have the return of the Timelords, and yet again there are more holes in this story than there are Orcs in LOTR.
So the Timelords were caught in a time bubble, and wanted to return.
OK.
So how do they get out?
They throw a diamond to Earth, and use that as a beacon. Huh?
And then they want to destroy the universe and time. And ascend?
Why would they even come to Earth to do this?
And how do you stop these omnipotent beings? By shooting the diamond with an old gun.
It's not because it's SF that there are no rules to stories.
You don't just chuck in new stuff because it ties your story together. There must be logic. If Wolverine falls in a pit, you can't just give him flying powers and expect viewers to say "cool!". No amount of FXs and loud music is going to cover up sloppy writing.
The whole thing about the Time Lords was totally wasted.
And while before it was said that Donna would be destroyed by regaining her knowledge, now she was "just sleeping?"
Heck, it's Monty Python's dead parrot sketch all over.
And when depleted of inspiration, steal ideas!
So we get the TIE fighter attack from Star Wars, the SW Cantina, and Spock's death scene from TWOK.
I can see RTD thinking: "Great SF death scene? Hmmmm. Wrath of Khan!"
There are some highlights.
The scenes with Cribbins and Tennant are great. No FXs, no loud bangs, just good writing and great acting. I loved that.
I was touched as Tennant said he didn't want to die.
The last part was actually very good.
But the main story was crap. What a waste. A very contrived way to get to the regeneration. It would make so much more sense if the build-up had been logical.
Thanks, RTD. Please ascend now.....

just saw it and i thought it was a good send off to david tennants doctor. they did not say why the next series will be known as series 1. the doctors regenerations were not retconned and started over, the continuity remains from the last few yearsCheck out my website dedicated to custom as well as classic and modern action figures! What I don't get is Dalton being Rasselon
First of all, Rasselon has been dead for ages before the time war ... also, in the 5 Doctors Rasselon was totally against immortality -- "he knew it was a curse"
Sometimes I think RTD never seen one episode of the classic series.Comment

SPOILER!
There's no indication that the next series will reboot, except for the fact that the TARDIS is apparently destroyed/heavily damaged during the regeneration.
RTD won't rest until he can take everything with him to the grave.
Why a regeneration would blow apart the TARDIS is beyond me.....

The general consensus seems to be we all know the Doctor and TARDIS are somehow linked ... Add this to the fact the Tenannt Doctor is the only Doctor that desperately don't want to regenerate.
His negative and fighting vibes probably blew out the TARDIS's circuits.
Sounds as good as any other reasonComment

I wondered more about the character credited as The Woman (Claire Bloom) who is revealed as one of the Timelords. Who was she? Susan?
After seeing a scene with him (& the preview of next season), I feel a bit better about Matt Smith as the next Doctor now.

Did Billie Piper shoot a good-bye scene that got cut? Saw her in the credits but not in the story..Comment
-
Yes all the Billie Piper Scenes are there intact towards the end of the episode before the doctor regenerates in the tardis. He goes back to meet her in the days just before she ever met the doctor.Comment
-
Wouldn't she had recognized him later on, as the guy she met on New Year?.
