        The Discovery channel is orbiting?
Capt. Kirk: "Is there anyone on this ship, who even remotely, looks like Satan?"
Mr. Spock: "I am not aware of anyone who fits that description, Captain"
Capt. Kirk: "No, Mr. Spock, I didn't think you would be"

          Talk about being vague, Mike...

If it's about the actual space program...I have absolutely no idea why this is in the sci-fi forum.

Actually, I loved this movie when I first saw it. It just has been so long since then. If you read the comics pages, today in "Sally Forth" the husband was upset that 2010 was here and that we didn't have a spaceship able to go to Jupiter, yet.
                It's all good!

We only have a few more years to get the flying cars that Back to the Future 2 promised us.

Movies always overestimate the progress of man in the future.

One of the problems is humankind themselves don't seem to be progressing as they used too in the past ... Yes today we have computers and cell phones but what does that actually do for helping humans progress ?

The past 30 years man got fat and lazy and is more worried about making better video games and SFX in movies.

I remember reading an article back in the 90's with Majel Roddenbery. SHe was asked why she thought the space program had floundered compared to what had been in the 60's and 70's when Star Trek was gaining popularity. I'm paraphrasing, but she had said that: to the general public, the drama was over and that until we find out that there is gold and platinum on one of Jupiter's moon or money to be made from materials and products made in space. The push for getting out there will not happen again.
                      It's all good!

It might. It was fear and xenophobia that got us to the moon. At any rate, you gotta make it seem worthwhile to people; that is, there has to be something in it for THEM.

....which is sad, 'cos nobody sees the value in endeavour for it's own sake, or for potential long term payoffs.

I think the only reason the United States went to the moon was it was Johnson's plan to offset Vietnam in everyones heads.

It was a way of making the public think America was doing something else except just getting it's young people killed for basically no reason.

IMO, if it wasn't for Vietnam, the US would have never gone to the moon until maybe the late 70's ... and that's only if the Russians never went by then.

It's amazing how the cold war drove exploration and tecnhology now without a powerful enemy everything is crawling. That's why in the 50's and 60's everyone assumed we'd be to other planets by now. The tech was evolving so fast to "out do the ruskies"
