He wrote Alien, they liked the concept and after that basically treated him like ****, saying his writing sucked.
Watch the Alien Quadrilogy making of, and see how big movie companies suck the little guys with good ideas dry and throw away the withered corpse.
He could have been a contender....

"When things are at their darkest, it's a brave man that can kick back and party."
COD was complication from long-term Crohn's Disease (an ailment of the digestive system) which he had been dealing with for over 30 years. His last week had been very bad.
I'm very saddened. He was a personal hero of mine.
I mentoned it to Brian Narelle ("Doolittle" from DARK STAR, now a professional cartoonist and animator) today. He commented:
"Living and working with Dan was always an adventure. One day I saw a drawing he'd done. As good as Norman Rockwell. His talents ran deep."
The WWII Bomber portion of the Heavy Metal movie was his. TOTAL RECALL was another of his works. His writing credits are long and successful - some of the signature works of my generation of SF. He worked with a lot of students as well.
And yes, he starred as Pinback in his film DARK STAR.
I remember a bit he wrote for one of the Twilight Zone relaunches. The story was about a writer (Named after himself) who was haunted by little robed demons. When the writer confronts the demon's they told him the only way he could exorcise the demons was to write about them. Pretty prolific if you ask me.
