    CGI

    Interestin article:

Does CGI Ruin Movies? - Avatar - io9

I kind of agree. Spectacle IS part of a movie, but it's only part. But it's the part that EVERYBODY'S focussed on the last few decades.

has this guy been living in a cave for 15 years? Avatar is the latest log on the firee, the CGI has killed movies argument has been going on ever since JAR JAR BINKS first walked in screen (who knows it might have been before that i can't recall)

what CGI has done is spotlighted the shift from plot to effects and now since EVERY film has killer effects they can't make us gloss over the crap of a weak plot.

You know in bad sci fi movies aliens always warn us we're going to develop a weapon that our childlike minds can't understand? That's what I think of when I see rampant CGI.

It's this big crayon and hollywood has become this enourmous three year old, colouring not only inside the lines but outside of them, on the cover and eventually the carpet and walls.

With restraint, I like CGI it's a wonderful tool.

Without Restraint, it pulls me right out of the movie. My son was watching "attack of the clones" recently and it kind of reminded me of old "Land of the Lost" episodes, the background is so unreal and noticeable, I don't get how that doesn't bother people.

I guess I am a dinosaur, but I would rather see a matte painting than a CGI background. Especially the Star Wars stuff. They just have so much moving in the background, I find it hard to focus on what I'm supposed to be watching.
        It's all good!

Well that's what I meant, there is a happy medium between doing a great job and "dude look I made that little door open and close"

Back in the 70's I used to hate CSO just as bad as I hate CGI today.

I can't say I hated CSO per se (the cso process made star wars look amazing) but as applied to TV it is pretty awful (70's and 80's Dr who and land of the lost being really good examples). CGI is just a ramped up version of CSO with computers to "take the edge off" the overlay and change the user's position on the screen.

with you man especially on who. it's funny but when CSO starts and is used infrequently it's ok (like carnival of monsters, revenge of the cybermen) but when it becomes the feature of the show (green death, invasion of the dinosaurs, underworld) it was horrific

I'm a dinosaur too. I much prefer Claymation and stop motion animation and drawn cartoons than CGI. I'm just glad The Fantastic Mr. Fox is done in stop-motion.

I think CGI tries to look so real it looks horrible and fake. I hate seeing CGI figures walking across the screen. It's so overly done and doesn't look right. I prefer cartoons so much more than CGI. I was horribly disappointed with Beowulf's CGI. And I hate looking at CGI hair. Simplicity is so much better than all this flash and hoopla.

                          I totally agree.

When it's used correctly, like to touch up standard effects like digitally removing wires from flying rigs, it's a great tool that compliments and enhances traditional effects and tools. When it's used to replace sets, actors, props and models it becomes a distracting eyesore that you just can't unsee totally taking you out of the movie.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Exactly. Someone bring back Ray Harryhausen and stop motion... those were the days
