    Prisoner remake

    OK.

So it's no longer in The Village.
The makers said that wouldn't work anymore.
    It's in the Namibian desert.
Of course, that's the only logical place. Where else?

And Number Two is no longer just a number. No, he has a wife and kids and everyday problems. Just a regular guy.

And Patrick McGoohan agreed to star as Number Two, but they chose someone else.
No wonder the man died after that.

I am so looking forward to this!

    >The makers said that wouldn't work anymore.

That kind of thing bothers me. The villiage was anachronistic when the ORIGINAL show came out. It's SUPPOSED to be. It's not SUPPOSED to "work;" that's what makes it weird and memorable.

    >Of course, that's the only logical place.

OF COURSE, 'cos of current world events the desert is associated with "bad" in people's minds.

    >he has a wife and kids and everyday problems. Just a regular guy.

Presumably the originals did too; but they never SHOWED it, and that kept 'em mysterious. I guess that wouldn't work any more, either.

*sigh* Like I said before; the changes take things closer to everything else out there. Even the wife and kids: it's an attempt to humanize 2.... which the original did (in some cases) with dialogue and characterization.

The village worked when looked at in it's then current context. There were hoilday resort towns in england that were like that even the dress was the "casual' wear in the resort towns (see also Delta and the Bannermen of Doctor who).

for a modern equivalent think Cruise ship or all inclusive island resort. everyone there adopts the rules of the community whiel they are there.

when veiwed from our eyes (the oldest child of the mego era is in their mid-late 40's) it seems odd all around.

Bummer. I have a feeling they will ruin this remake. The Prisoner is one of my all time favorite TV shows.

The series was already "timeless" when it was originally aired.
          Why wouldn't it work now?

I'm, not saying the prisoner wouldn't work in something very close to the original format but somethings would feel different because of the modern era (unless shot as retro)
so everyone might be in khaki's and golfshirts instead of the snappy blazers with pipping and instead of a seaside resort it might be a tropical island or a cruise ship so of course cell's won't work there.

I am sure we would see smart cars ans Pruis's (or is it Pruii?)

with them going deasert i guess that works as again so remote cell's won't work and excape is difficult but now it will feel like a prison to even the most dense veiwer. in the original show it had to seep in that No 6 is the bird in a gilded cage

              >Why wouldn't it work now?

To the EXECS it's 'cos the show isn't like everything else on now. (Expect lots of pipework and grilled catwalks....) It'd be a risk to do something that looked like that today 'cos you don't have any way to gauge audience reaction.

              >somethings would feel different because of the modern era

You're right; but that's kind of the point, The village isn't SUPPOSED to be right. Even on the original it was anchronistic. Everyone looked like they'd stepped out of an 1880 carnival.

I think of the last prisioner remake; "Nowhere Man," and how they tried to do the prisioner without any fo them icky-poo weird things that'd confuse the audience. And it was HORRIBLE! It felt like "The Fugitive," and placing it more or less in the real world led to all sorts of plot holes. (So.... according to the first episdoe, the bad guys control all the world EXCEPT Photomat? Oooohhhh! Scary!)

....'couse I suspect it was all an attempt to make it more like the "X-Files." (Gaping plot holes and all....)

              *sigh*

              >I am sure we would see smart cars ans Pruis's

...depending on who pays more for licensing.

The original series runs on the Retro Channel on Comcast Cable in PA. I catch it some evenings, so maybe you could check it out there. I don't know about remakes of old shows, it's hard to capture that magic of the 60's. The Green Hornet is going to be hit or miss too I fear. Here's hoping for something good.

Never cared for the original show...but the show called Nowhere Man, that was on UPN here in the US, was a great show and was compared to The Prisoner. The series is available on DVD if you are interested.

I was so pleased comcast on demand put the whole 67 series up I had a Prisoner weekend it was just as great as I remember (0f course each epsisode was "wrapped" with a promo for the new show).

thoughts for the new show -
Iam Mckellum will be an excellent No 2 but I am not so confident of Jim Caveziel for No 6. The clips make it more of a gulag in that there seems to be no hope of servival if you flee. oddly the one aspect of the original show that could have been improved (Rover) wasn't it's still a giant baloon (I beleive the original rover baloon was a budget compromise)

that said I will sit down on nov 3 to see the new show but if it doesn't wow me on ep 1 (which the original show did with Arrival) I won't stick around for the rest.

                        be seeing you

That's cool. Rover is one of the most recognized things from the original. Changing Rover would be like changing the Daleks into flying centaur things.

The original Rover was a robotic wheeled cart-thingie; but they changed it 'cos he looked like a cupcake. The weather balloon was something they had on hand, so they went with it.

Hmmmm.... kinda. But whereas the Chumblie's had a cupcake-like shape; Rover actually LOOKED like a cupcake. It was rounded at the top, pastel coloured, and had a red light at it's peak.
