Doctor Who The New Series combining into the Classic Series

    Just wondering,
Do you think after a time the New Series will eventually be regarded as just Dr Who the series along with the classic series ?

What made me think this is remembering after the hiatus in the 80's and the arrival of Sly McCoy ... In the back of my mind I always regarded the McCoy years as a new revived series.

This idea did not disappear until well into the 90's for me.
Today I regard the McCoy years as Classic Dr Who.

Do you think the New Series will ever be regarded as anything other then The New Series ?

Or will it be like Star Trek The Next Generation and never be regarded as Classic ?

A lot of hurdles there, a long gap, change in format, production quality etc. Even it's fan base is a lot different, many of the current fans were only toddlers when the original was airing.

I've always felt the show changed a great deal during it's own run, Pertwee's first season was wildly different than the first two Doctor's series. Baker's run changed tone a number of times, so it's all relative i guess.

If you stick around long enough everything becomes that classic from years ago.

To me,i think the old Dr Who from Hartnell until McCoy era are classed as the classic series and the Ecclestone,Tennant,Smith era is the New series of Dr Who.

Just like with Star Trek T.O.S against all the new Star Trek spin offs TNG,DS9,Voyager and Enterprise.

eventually it'll be a classic I guess (i mean a plymouth k car is technically a classic but who cares) but it will always be separated from the original show if only for the 10 year hiatus

the mccoy haitus was much shorter and the basic show was unchanged (same network production team etc) only the actor changed and that was nothing new at that point

            To me, it's all Who.
I guess only McGann and Peter Cushing are considered "out-of-series" to me.

Just as I love ST TOS AND Enterprise, and don't see any "dividers" between them....

I'd agree.. If it's an actor change, such as the 'classic' Doctor Who, it doesn't detract from the 'continuity' of the production teams themselves, the renewal of production contracts, getting on the next year's schedule, etc.

But, please correct me if I'm wrong.., when the show came back with Paul, Christopher, then David, I regard this not only as a major revamp, but a different production crew altogether. Same concept (like Trek's TOS and Next Gen), but different production teams so I agree with the 'classic' vs. 'new' series. I do remember that there were folks from TOS on staff with Next Gen in the beginning (David Gerrold, Matt Jeffries, etc..), but the major creative/production folks were indeed new.

I tend to view it more as like TOS and the animated series. Still the same but not quite.

I think Rik hit it on the head for me. . . .we divide our world into universes. . . . the Trek Universe. . . . .The WHo Universe. . . . . .now withing those Universes. . . .there can be differences. . . . those would be the galaxies. . . .but all part of the one universe.

And Lets face it. . . .whilst production quality leaped. . . .the Daleks looked the same. . . .and the Slitheen could have walked off a 1980's set. . . . .so over time. . . they will blurr. . . . .to some extent.

                  Jelly Baby anyone?
