I'm reading the star trek book "the probe".It takes place after star trek IV and deals with the probe.
I think it answers this question?
I'm sure the probe is just that though a probe nothing inside.The question is who sent it?

Watching the movie, I always assumed it was an AI, therefore the reason that it couldn't respond to other input like Starfleet hails. I always imagined that it came from the same beings that constructed the doomsday machine since it had a similar texture to its exterior.It's all good!Comment

In one of the early Classic Star Trek movies they featured (very quickly) an alien woman who was human in shape but looked very strange -- perhaps whale-like.
I read in one of my Trek Tech books this race is part whale.
I always imagine the makers of the probe to look similar to her.
I wish I had more info as to whom i'm talking about, but I totally forgot at the moment.Comment

That is curious. I ways wondered who sent the probe. Keep us updated. I wouldn't be shocked to learn it's Q screwing with the humans. Actually scratch that. That plot would suck ...... LOL !

Hold on a second. How can the probe be from the same people as the Doomsday Machine? I got the impression that wherever the Doomsday Machine came from, all the life there was destroyed. That was why it was so scary, once it was activated it just annihilated everybody. I don't get it.Comment
