Watching Voyager we learn there is a future Federation, whos job is to protect the timeline and to keep splits in in to happen. If this is the case what we saw in the Trek movie never happened.
Other gripes and nits to pick
When young kirk is driving the car, we see a Nokia radio. I though inthe federation time line corporations were all gone.
When Kirk meets McCoy, McCoy tells kirk his wife took him for all he had. I thought the Federation eliminated the need for money and possessions?
Oh well I guess I have the old shows to keep me going

Yeah. I don't know about Voyager, but of course if there is a timeline where someone goes back to do the same thing before Voyager's time, then that cancels that out.
But Bones used to be short for "Sawbones" which was perhaps an Archaic reference to old Earth ship Doctors. It sort of bothered me that so many of the people in Starfleet were always quoting old Earth and old USA history... but I guess Bones is not short for "Sawbones" anymore. I think that was from "The Cage" maybe. The restored version.
And TNG used money in some undercover episode where Riker said "He didn't carry/need/use money" I thought but I guess the Federation has money and possessions now too.
So they used the McCoy is divorced backstory, but at the expense of the future is bright and we don't have corporations or money. But we do have divorce.
That means the happy future is now less happy and idyllic. But hey, the Franchise only made a few Billion Dollars off that schtick. At least this Quarter looks good for the studio, right?
I hate revisionist historians. There is no reason they could not have kept the original optimistic underpinnings and still used at Timeline split to set up a new deal.
I also think it would have been PERFECTLY OK to have them do something to change the look and feel of the past and have a different ship be the focus of that "revamped TOS" era and do the movie that way.
That is my "have your cake and eat it too scenario." And then they could have had Kirk and Spock involved if they wanted to.
I think I would have tried to have Sulu and the Excelsior do something with the Guardian of Forever, change everything and have Kirk and Spock somehow called in to investigate the "changes."
I'd have crammed the Excelsior with older TOS era actors, etc and had some ship with whatever hotties they want take Kirk and Spock to the Guardian or the Anomaly, or whatever, and they go back, mess it up more perhaps, and we end up with a new ship/crew in the revamped TOS era going off and everyone gets one more shot at a nice scene and we don't have to rewrite history with Kirk/Spock/McCoy... it is preserved in its own time... and we start over.
I would have tried something like that. Instead of the Guardian, they could have used whatever else they wanted (except something stupid like Red Matter....) and done the same thing. Every living actor could have had a cameo and they could have also had a clean slate and there could still be the TOS actors/timeline intact.
But they didn't ask me and I didn't finish my Star Trek V script or even go out to pitch an idea to them. So that is what I get for not trying.
That is my 2cents. Probably more like $15.00 when adjusted for inflation.

I feel EXACTLY the same way as you do.
While Nu-Trek might be visually superior to some (lens flares not withstanding, LOL) due to technological advances, it definitely lacks the heart and soul of Real-Trek. I've seen the Nu-movie a few times and unfortunately, my initial joy diminished after the first viewing at "what they had done" sunk in.
Sure, it made a ton of cash...and in moments (when it tried to ape the original), it tried to have some of the old magical spirit, but for me anyway, that's too little, too late..
They were right about one thing ... this wasn't your father's Star Trek..
Like New Coke... I'll take the real thing instead... Classic all the way!

Thank you for the encouragement. I haven't seen it a 2nd time yet but I may.
I wrote somewhere about First Contact. Good movie. Fun to watch. Did NOT hold up. Really trashed "cannon." Diminished upon reflection.
Unlike, for example, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. After I first saw that, I picked up and heard new funny bits from it for years. I am sure if I watch it again it will be even better. I had planned to quote from it on my Black Belt Test. I so wanted to work in "African or European" but they didn't ask me many or any questions as I recall and I didn't have a chance to be a smart @s$.
I am sure this movie will buy them a few years perhaps. Not 40. Maybe not even 10.
I hope Nimoy is embarassed.
Vulcan's are extinct? 2 Spocks? It is like Comic Book "redos." Maybe they plan to reboot again in 5yrs anyway if they can set a precedent.

Yeah, that's kinda my problem with it. All the things you mention take away from the unique Trek-ness of the tv series'.

It bothers me that every film in a given franchaise HAS to be a big event (like superhero comics) and have some long reaching effect. In the Trek setting you could do all sorts of stories without mucking with the setting.
....like, maybe something with a NEW crew and a NEW ship....?
