I don't think culture-centrism is the main gist of the problem. I thnk most people have very small spheres of perception, so anything that's not directly in front of their face has no value. That's why trends come and go so fast; what's big now is probably forgotten next year. What's big on the other side of the planet has no value here 'cos it's drownt out by so many brighter and closer objects. (And probably doesn't feature any of the currently recognized icons. Maybe if Will Smith played Perry Rhodan it'd go over here....)
