Saw HBO making of Land Of The Lost (ugh!)

When even the making of LOTL has boob and dinosaur urine jokes I hate to think about how much more of that stuff there is in the whole movie.

I also hate that they got rid of Rick Marshall being Will and Holly's father just so Rick can end up (I'm sure) tapping Holly.

I don't have too much hoe for this movie even though I loved the show and thought a big budget remake treatment could've been done wonderfully.

I'm curious, are you upset that it's a comedy?

Not that I am defending the new movie, it most likely will probably stink. But c'mon, it's not like the original was top notch action adventure drama. I mean, I love Sid and Marty Krofft stuff a bunch--but watching old Land Of The Lost episodes today is like watching a comedy

I wouldn't mind it being tongue in cheek (I really love the trailers where the Dinosaur seeming to understand when Rick is trash talking it and takes action). I just hate that it is going down the same bodily function/sex jokes that have already been done to death and done better in upteen other movies.

And this is the type of movie that could've been done with less of that stuff and been a family event. Instead of a teenage Beavis and Butthead brained event with CGI dinosaurs.

It's just when I saw the scene with Rick pouring a jug of Dinosaur pee on him and even drinking a bit of it (the excuse was to hide their smell for dinosaurs but it was just done for laughs) any desire I had to see the movie evaporated.

          OK, gotcha.

Yeah, there's no way I'm going to the theater with this one--more like I'll catch it on cable two years from now.....

I'm not a Will Ferrell hater, I actually think he's funny--he's just WAY overexposed.

For better or worse, we face yet another re-boot! Cant blame the producers for screwing this one up either, since the Krofft brothers wrote (the initial script) and produced it.

Makes you wonder what they are going to do with their Pufnstuf movie due out in 2011?

I am willing to bet that the Kroffts initial script was much different than what is on the screen. They have screen and producer credit but they are not the main writers and not the executive producers. I think they took the check and either didn't care or did care and the main control for thier property got away from them. Either way, they are most likely contract bound to "talk up" the movie in appearances.

Heres the article I read today. Doesnt sound like they are just talking it up...They really seem to think its going to go gangbusters. I would have thought they would've made a more family friendly film, closer to the original in scope too. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of film producers??

I say that because I was reading some buzz on Ain't it cool and this one guy was talking about a pre-screening of LOTL he attended with the Kroffts and he observed that after the movie they looked "shell-shocked" at how bad it was.

But who know if that can be believed. It is plausible though. I've seen time and time again the cast and crew talking up a movie that when it bombs they tell how they really felt a year or so later.

Could be they did the article before seeing the finished product too. The old "Dont worry guys..its going to be great" thing. "We used your script...pretty much....We had to "polish it up" a bit here and there, but's it you guys all the way!"
Shortly followed by the old "Whatta ya' mean you didnt like it? Its testing through the roof. We're going to make you guys household names...err...again. Besides...it hits theaters in a week. Cant change it now. You should have said something earlier!"

I'm surprised they didn't go the whole "Brendan Frasier" treatment with this but I'm not offended they went the comedy route. I imagine if this makes a lot of money, there will be a kid friendly spin off.

I have a feeling that the development process went this way when they signed Will Ferrell to this. The humor in this movie is the same humor in any Will Ferrell movie.

Look, here's the deal. Land Of The Lost was not the greatest show in the world. But I liked it and I like what it was trying to do.

Land Of The Lost was trying to do as credible a Science Fiction show as much as was possible given the fact that they were on Saturday Morning TV in the 1970's. The show was also about a close and competent family coping with a fantastic and hostile environment.

Yes, it could be hokey and the effects were bad (though, I think the effects they did for the time and for the budget deserve praise) but it had a heart and it was reaching for quality (and I really think the writing, especially under David Gerrold in the first season did have some quality work).

I am not a die hard fan of it who is screaming about how they dishonored LOTL. I simply saw the things the original show was reaching for and saw great potential for it to be realized as a big budget, big screen movie adaption.

It could've been something fun, a high minded adventure with a lot of humor focusing on a family persevering in the face of fantastic surroundings and events.

Instead, it is yet another vehicle for Will Ferrell (whom I like some of the time) and his brand of bodily function, sexual, gross out humor.

I don't doubt that the Kroffts came out of the screening "shell-shocked"

if they have producer credits that means the better is sells the more money they make so of course they will make it sound good.
