    Doctor Who movie?

I saw this today in the film section on my homesite:

" A new movie version of Doctor Who is currently being developed, according to the BBC.

According to Empire Online, the plans for the big screen venture are contained within a BBC story on their new CBBC spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, which is to feature an appearance from David Tennant's Doctor.

The actor will soon be replaced in the iconic role by newcomer Matt Smith - but has not completely ended his involvement with the franchise.

The BBC story reveals that a script is "in development" for a possible Dr Who movie, which may well see Tennant reprising his role yet again. If so, the big screen adventure would mark the doctor's first cinematic outing since Peter Cushing's Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 AD in 1966.
    "

A bit of a kick in the teeth to the fans?

This is very interesting if true.........

Tennant is clearly the most popular Doctor ever -- with a bit of competition from Tom.

Back in Tom's days this really should have been done to capitalize on his popularity but the BBC let it slip.

I hope today they don't make the same mistake.

But, if Tennant doesn't star, I can see it being a real flop

It's Tennants massive popularity that has to sell it.

      Also,

I really hope to God they don't do a prequel

They shouldn't give away any more hints of Dr Who's origin or they'll ruin the whole franchise

Thing is, he leaves then comes back in a film. If he wants to carry on playing the Doctor then he shouldn't have left.

Maybe they should do it with the new guy to boost his profile and make sure the series doesn't die, they could get McGann and/or Eccleston back to draw in the fans.

Of course none of it matters if the story's crap. Oh and for Gods sake keep RTD away from it.

I don't really mind if they do it out of context -- meaning make it when the THE NEW guy is the Doctor.

For a couple of reasons ..

          1. I know i'm not going to like the new guy at all so I don't care

          2. The audio novels are made using old Doctors anyway

            >I really hope to God they don't do a prequel

Hmmmm.... y'know.... it wouldn't bother me so much if they did; provided it remains an actual part of the continuity. I'd hate to see a weird "side story" where we find out he's half human, and has a long lost evil brother. (Although when they showed Jack's bro I was kinda entertained.... and creeped out.... but I'd hate to see it again.)

....and I don't mind them using Tennant even though he's left the show. Since the Doctor travels thorugh time you could bring back ANY of his incarnations.... or even older ones we haven't seen yet.

'Course, since there are three versions of THIS Doctor running around, I'd like to see more with them too.

Tennant's Doctor makes perfect sense to pop in whenever considering this season he's just bouncing around the cosmos with no human counterpart.

Unfortuantely, I haven't caught any of the newer seasons since Donna first joined. My DVR lost track of it on Sci Fi and now I just don't know where to find new episodes.

Here is a detailed article in today's Variety about the new stuff on BBC America. It has some airdates for the last Tennant stuff-
'Doctor Who' returns to BBC America
'Doctor Who' returns to BBC America - Entertainment News, TV News, Media - Variety
                WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

Thanks, Mike. I'll have to set the DVR to catch 'em whenever they air and watch them as they come in.

Heard about the movie earlier. Was announced around the time they were looking for the 11th Doctor.

If the script is good I am all for it BUT so far these holliday specials haven't been so good.

I am ok with a prequel if it covers a period completely new but DOES NOT try to reinvent things
                        examples:
make the set retro and have a 30-50 year old to portray a younger Hartnell doctor
Paul Mcgann since he never got anyt screen time beyond the tv movie and there is no regeneraction scene in rose the door is open for him - and he isn't too old yet
Eccleston - least likely but again the time between seasons 1 and 2 can be explored or even in season 1 with rose

Another option could be feature length animation to allow a mutiple doctor story using the surviving ones who the years weren't so klind to (colin and tom).

I know Eccleston isn't likely, but I would like to see the Time War done with a large enough budget to be able to show the scope of it.

Just watched 28 Days Later again, and he is still a creepy *******. Going to try and dig out Shallow Grave.

I actually would like to see a prequel as well that showed how the Hartnell incarnation escaped Gallifrey with his granddaughter. It wonder if they would address his part human heritage that was brought in via the Fox McGann version.

I think at the end of the day, it would have to be Tennant. He's pretty much the sure thing in terms of recognizable Doctor these days. Why risk the newcomer or someone who hasn't played the Doctor before?
