Was Sam Jones' voice really dubbed in Flash Gordon ?

Perhaps, this is common knowledge, but I never heard this before today.
I heard in Flash Gordon Sam Jones was almost totally dubbed over by an uncredited voice actor because the director didn't like Jones' voice.

This would explain a lot of times I seen Jones in other shows and thought his voice sounded really deep and gruff compared to what it was in Flash.

now that you said that his voice does look a little off I thought it was more a product of the times but it could be that he was fully over dubbed.

I heard it wasnt so much his voice, as the lack of emotion he parlayed. In short, he pretty much said everything monotone, and DeLaurentis thought he was awful.

I borrowed a friends VHS of this a while ago to rewatch it. The tape had a little booklet about the making of, and had tidbits like that in it....I assume the newer DVD's came with the same booklet thingie?

After re-re watching this movie, I still didnt like it. I know its supposed to be a bit of a spoof or whatever, but it just doesnt sit well with me. I used to think it was just the music (detest Queen..and that type of music in general), but its the whole execution of the film. Oh well, to each their own right?!

No offense meant Hector. I listen to Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers, and some still livin' Cowpokes like Ian Tyson...I'm sure theres a few folks out there who would rather be run over by a road grader dipped in iodine than listen to them.

              I like Queen

I don't love them, but I like them

As far as Queen doing the Flash Gordon soundtrack, imo it was PERFECT and I can't imagine Flash Gordon without Queen.

Having Queen do the soundtrack was a nutty radical idea that most people would have said (at the time) would have doomed the movie.

In practice, it actually worked more then I bet even the producers imagined.

IMO, it was the Queen soundtrack that made the movie such a cult hit today.

When people think of Kahn, they think of Shatner yelling KHAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When people think of Flash Gordon, they think of FLASH, AH-AH, HE'S A MIRACLE

Let's not forget Queen's awesome contribution to Highlander as well.

I always assumed that Jones dubbed himself over but I could be wrong.

I've always thought the whole movie seems overdubbed. Just one shade better than a Godzilla movie with the dialog floating out of sync on a different track.

If Jones did get overdubbed, there was a lot of that going around at the time. Klinton Spilsbury got overdubbed by Stacy Keach's brother in "The Legend of the Lone Ranger" just a few years later.

I just read this on Wiki

Not sure if it's true because, after all, it is wiki ....

According to Empire magazine, Sam J. Jones had troubles of some sort with the director, which resulted in almost all of his dialogue being dubbed by a professional voice actor whose identity is still a mystery.

I'd never heard that before, it would be kind of sad if true.

Dave Prowse didn't know his Darth Vader dialogue was going to be dubbed by James Earl Jones, and he and Jones have never met to this day. There are some clips around of his original vocals, apparently his thick Welsh accent lead to him being referred to as "Darth Farmer" by Carrie Fisher et al on set.

                        Cheers,

Was movie supposed to be tongue in cheek sorta?
I went bats over it when it came out, and I wore a copy of queens soundtrack album out.
I never heard of the guys voice being overdubbed, not saying it isnt true. He had alot of energy in his voice didnt he?

either way, the movie is a classic and I agree with Mike, the soundtrack made the movie. Queen rules....long live Queen.
