Which franchise has a brighter future now? Star Wars or Star Trek?

I know most love both (like me)...but this thread is forcing you to choose ONE over the other.

Prior to the new Star Wars trilogy...I would have said Star Wars...but the new trilogy almost turned me into a hater...almost. I still have great respect and admiration for Star Wars...but I just can't get the new trilogy's sour taste out of my mouth...it left me with a bad aftertaste.

Star Trek also has not been a perfect ride for me. First off, way too many TV shows and spinoffs...and not all the feature films were that great...especially my most hated one, Star Trek V...good grief...I really hate that one.

Also...while I did like First Contact a lot...I really hate the rest of the TNG flicks.

However...one flick convinced me that one franchise is just starting to get warmed up...and its engines shinning once again...and that the other one...had its last hurrah....

...and that was JJ Abrams' new Star Trek movie.

Star Trek is about to go warp factor 10...while Star Wars has hit the wall...and might stay far...far away.

I agree with you that Star Trek probably does right now.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Lucas is doing a smart thing with Clone Wars on Cartoon Network, laying the groundwork for another generation of fans. That is something Trek really needs to consider doing.

Star Wars needs to take a breather...it's been THE space opera for the last 30-something years. Let Star Trek have a run at it once again if they can keep up the quality.

              Hmmmm....

Interesting question; but I think it's a moot point. We have a habit of going absolutely insane over the "current thing," and then forgetting it months later. Trek looks good 'cos of the new film; but eventually there'll be another big press Star Wars SOMETHING, it'll be the big thing for a bit, and the eternal dance will continue.

I suspect part of the hype effect is based on the "everyone needs a winner" thing we were discussing last year as pertaining to music: there HAS to be a "winner," so peole kinda backmask whatever's currently being hyped into their heads as THE thing. Everything else is pointless. Then the nerd fights begin. (And I gotta admit, the folks here keep a MUCH better sense of perspective about it than some sites I've seen.)

Plus whenever the live action series comes out.

I too love both(Star Trek 1st!)...but right now Star Wars is getting a royal Butt kicking!

And we haven't heard a peep about the status of the Star Wars live action TV Series...what's up with that?

I think Dons answer above is the best one so far, but I'll still throw my 35 cents into the kitty!

I liked the new Trek film, just not as Star Trek. I am not sure if it will have the legs to carry a series of films, at least not in the long run. Really depends on how creative they get with the sequel, and just how many new fans they grab with this film. From what I've read, it looks like the majority of audiences (that were polled) were in the 30+ age bracket, so its difficult to say how this objective is going?

Star Wars is cultivating a new crop of fans through the cartoon series, and has a live action series coming out soon.Plus, they have already survived the old vs new fanbase issues and came through relatively unscathed (at least according to product and ticket sales).
Another intangible here is Lucas keeps mentioning the "other three" films in his 9 movie story line every so often. When something new is out, he says the 6 movies tell the story....then he offhandedly mentions some little tidbit about movie 7,8, or 9, and everybody gets revved up again! Mark Hamil still swears he was offered a contract to be the "Obi-Wan" of the next three...??? Who knows?

For these reasons I think Star Wars may take the win here. (although, as a Major Trek nut, I hope I'm wrong!)

There's absolutely no question they are more Star Wars fans than Star Trek fans right now.

But I'm taking about the future here.

I think its kinda a unfair question at the moment since Star trek is hot right now lets ask that question in a year or so from now.I like Star trek but I love Star Wars the original trilogy off course not the prequels those were garbage.I do know that Lucas is working on weekly live tv show thats takes place after Sith and before A New Hope focusing on how the rebellion got started and secondary characters .I am looking forward to it heard they already started casting its to be shot in his studios in Australia where the prequels were done

I had a half baked theory in another thread...

It appears that Star Wars and Star Trek are trending on an approximate decade nostalgia cycle in relation to one another.

                            Trek: 66-76
                            Wars: 77-84 (?)
Trek: 86-96 (TNG through to Borg Movie)
Wars: 97-Present (Special Ed release through to Clone Wars TV)
                            Trek: Present-?

I know I have a purposeful blindspot to Wrath of Khan and Voyager, but the highest grossing TOS Trek was Voyage Home in '86 right? Khan and Voyager always seemed to be a bit more "cult" than "mainstream-big" as indicated by the lack of popularity in merchandising/licensing in comparison to other eras.

I don't think it is Possible for the Power Of Trek to ever Rule over the Power of Star Wars,.. even more so, when you factor in all the Kids today,.. Merchandise & The LightSaber .

                              Kids love Star Wars.
Kids also love the New Episodes.
It is the Middle Age Men,.. that grew up in the 70's ,.. that don't like the new world of Star Wars because they are unable to understand it ,.. & nothing is as cool,.. or captivating,.. as when you are a child.

For Trek to Rule anything over Star Wars...., they would seriously Have to Gross,.. What like 5 Billion Dollars or much more World Wide,.. in Movies, Merchandise, & whatever else since the re-Launch of the New Trilogy,.. We won't even count to the 2 lame STNG Movies that came out,.. around the same time as the re-release of the Origional Trilogy. Which got Destroyed Cash Wise...

                              One things for certain,..
Alot of people ***** saying that this new Trek Movie,. is Not Trek.
The Samething Happened to Star Wars.
IMO ,.. this Flick is the Best thing to Ever Happen to Trek,.. with the Exception of the Mego's ofcourse.
