New Trek uniforms. Has anyone else noticed...

I can be pretty dense sometimes. It took me a second viewing of the movie to notice something about the colored uniform tunics.

What looked to me like a textured fabric take on the original series shirts is actually something a bit more.

You can sort of see just a little bit in this EW cover picture. The textured fabric effect is actually a whole bunch of lighter colored insignia shapes. So the fabric of the tunics is covered with a whole bunch of little insignias that make the fabric look textured.

I've read a lot of people don't like that look, and I agree.

It seems unnecessary and wouldn't happen on a uniform in real life.

    Question,

Does the new movie keep the Enterprise insignia as only for the Enterprise (like the old series) ?

Or does it represent Starfleet like in the movies and beyond ?

The insignia represents Starfleet in this movie (I saw no alternate insignias)

There is a bit of talk about this on a costuming forum, and finding the exact material to replicate these uniforms. Haven't really followed up on it, though, because of my affinity to TOS.

Yeah! I was going to say that! Also we don't have velour collars anymore. The undershirt has the neck collar. The color outer tunic's neckline is lower and wider.

I love the new textured fabric on their shirts...it translates better on the big screen.

Enough with the old rags of yesteryear...throw them all into the garbage can.

I never noticed that detail. At first I didn't like the way they looked, especially the way they are on the toys. Now I kinda like the way they look. I guess they grew on me

It's a nice touch.. I like the more 'fabric' look anyways. Like vulcan2074, I didn't think much of it myself.. (why not simply go with the 'Cage' uniforms, exterior coat, etc..), but it IS a reimage of the original series, so it's not THAT much of a departure from the Star Fleet style we've all come to know and love.

I bet they show up bigtime on IMAX (my IMAX theater didn't get Trek, unfortunataly)

                        >It seems unnecessary

Yeah; I kinda chalk it up to the current "make it BUSY!" design ethic. It doesn't bother me a lot; but it seems weird.... like a designer label or ever-present corproate logo.

"....and remember; only REAL StarFleet uniforms have the StarFleeo holo-logo!"

                        >and wouldn't happen on a uniform in real life.

Well.... in a sci-fi setting ANYTHING can be explained, so I wouldn't say uniforms would never be designed this way; but it'd be nice if someone somewhere had an in-story explanation.

                        >Also we don't have velour collars anymore.

HAW! Weren't the original outfits like this during the last season or so? A coloured tunic over a black shirt?

It seems to me, the makers of this movie told the costume designers --- we want uniforms like the old series ones but update them by making them cool

The designers sat and sratched their heads for a week thinking --- how can we update an over the head shirt ?

What we got is what you see.

There was a big discussion about this awhile back when the first prototypes of the Playmates figures started to show up. Thankfully the texture on the finished figures are not as severe as the chain-mail looking prototypes let on.

On the actual outfits themselves, I don't think the updated uniforms are better than the classic series ones and I don't think they are bad either. I was just shocked they stayed as close to the original uniforms as they did. I'm good with it.

Now, I do think the new Phasers and Communicators are not as cool looking as the originals. Not terrible, just maybe kinda bland or a little generic in comparison.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
