Ahh, ok with you now. Thanks ctc
Yeah i remember reading about Uhura and Roddenberry, apparently she was seen coming out of his office looking quite, em ,disheveled.
I can understand her flirting with Sulu, he was dishy, but kissing Kirk ? Nope.

I think the only thing Uhura officially got busy with on the original series was Roddenberry......Oh, yeah...she flirted with Mirror Sulu a bit too....and then the Kirk kiss thing.

Nah; Nurse Chapel had a thing for him. The cave scene was with a local woman who'd been sent to her world's past as punishment.

I saw it last weekend. I loved it. Although i had doubts that Zac Q could pull it off, esp after seeing him in Heroes. I stand corrected! He had that quiet majesty that Nimoy brought to the screen.I almost cried when Nimoy came on. That familiar face and comforting voice. He is STILL gorgeous.
Question To the Uhura/Spock naysayers, Didnt they have a brief dalliance in the original series? In a cave, no less, something to do with time travel i think, and it was before the Vulcans gained control of their emotions and embraced logic??????
Forgive my vagueness, it must have been at least 15 years since i saw that episode.
    Any takers?
(AND yes, its because of spock, that today i have the innate ability to arch ONE eyebrow, ever so apty to express many a vulcan thought)
Didnt realise how much of an impact it had as a kid, untill i saw the movie and realised thats EXACTLY what i do...
Yes, id make a DAMN good Vulcan

Just saw it last night, finally. I liked it quite a bit. I thought most of the characters were great, I even saw some of Shatner in the young Kirk character. Bones couldn't have been better, he was totally spot on. I didn't care for the Spock\Uhura thing. The Romulans were pretty cool, although I didn't really get their ship design. I always have issues with any sort of time travel. I don't think it's necessary as there is always enough material for an exciting story line with out it. I think the time travel thing opens up to many unknowns and issues.

Saw it last night... loved the way the actors evoked the spirit of the original actors...especially Dr. McCoy... dead on!

This should appeal to newcomers and fanboys and fangirls alike. I can't count the number of times we had "geek" moments when we'd hear a familiar Trek sound effect or a character would channel their original counterpart.

I just saw the movie this morning. It was FUN!! But....I didn't like Spock and Uhura's relationship. It was very out of character for BOTH of them. I can go see it again. Too bad I wasn't in my Uhura outfit, because today was just a perfect day to be out in a minidress and boots in San Francisco....but then maybe I wouldn't have gone shopping while wearing my outfit since it would be so out of character.

I liked it, they did a great job of breathing new life in a near-dead franchise.

The use of time travel neatly explains why certain things are different from vintage TOS. Very clever.
This way, you can let Vulcan be destroyed, and not mess up the TOS time-line, because that basically....never happened in this new Trek universe.

I would have prefered it staying closer to TOS, but it's OK, I can live with it.

The movie is very smooth, and gets some emotional punch in there whenever needed.
It's a bit slow at times, but this is "the beginning", so that's fine. Introducing the characters now and then slows the pace, but it's inevitable.

I think all actors did a great job, they did their homework. At times, I do feel they could have "toned it down" a bit. Some mannerisms are a bit too OTT.
Scotty was never this "funny and energetic". Doohan played that down more. Scotty was always my favourite, but Doohan was more subtle.

What I really disliked, was Spock and Uhura "doing the wild thing".
Too much emphasis on his human side, guys.
    Where was his Vulcan composure?
It especially bothered me that, when about to save Earth, they still felt the need to smooch on the transporter pad.
    So out of character.

All things considered, this was the only way to bring back all the Trek magic from the past. If you don't accept the reboot, then this new Trek is not for you. Ever.
But then you'll have to live without new Trek from now on, I guess.

I'm looking forward to the next one.
I also hope we have a new recurring character: Crewman Cupcake. Funniest guy on the ship....

My wife and I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. Sure there were plot holes you could drive a dump truck thru.

Plus, I'm convinced T1K is going to hate it.

I saw the movie last night and it's hard not to like it. It's got lots of action, it's very fast paced and it gives us a fresh start. It shows us that with a new young cast, free from the internal battles the previous cast had with Shatner, you can do a Trek production with less limitations on it. Trek can be smart and saavy and action-packed.

    BUT

This was a good film. It has a really solid story angle. So why change so many details? The plot: the timeline has been changed by Nero and we are now living in an alternate reality, does not have any bearing on the need to change the look of the sets, models, props, costumes, or the way they function. Every new Trek show or film goes thru a redesign process but this is radically different. It could have been explained that based on the "look" of things that this was an alternate reality even before Nero messed with time. They could have just as easily brought back the look of the old show and it would have easily fit better into continuity. Which brings me to another point.

Let me call out the writers and producers who have complaints about doing Trek shows and films. They claim they are too constrained by continuity. That being said this film draws far and wide from Trek stories liberally throwing in names of people, places and things from various shows. I would have to guess that after they developed the plot this film pretty much wrote itself. It doesn't take much thought to just sprinkle familiar names and dialogue from the old show in the new film.

Revealing that Sulu's combat training includes fencing is good. The use of Uhura's first name is great. Scotty saying the engines canna take much more of this! is complely in character. BUT we see Spock try to strand Kirk on Delta Vega, the planet where Kirk and Spock tried to strand Gary Mitchell in the second pilot. Dr. Piper from that pilot is referred to as killed on the Enterprise after the first attack by Nero. The scene where Spock quotes Shelock Holmes on the bridge in front of the viewscreen was literally taken from ST6. Capt. Pike is confined to a wheelchair-but not as extreme as his condition in The Managerie. And on and on...

This film is going to be a blockbuster because of it's style. This is a modern action flick. The scenes done in this film could have been done in any Trek film but certainly would not have looked as good as they do here. You could best compare them to the fight scenes between Kirk and Krudge in STIII. If done today they would be hyper-energetic like the hand to hand fight on the drill mechanism in this film.
