Star Trek: Who is Robert April?

I'm a few chapters into the Star Trek novel Best Destiny and the character of Robert April sounds familiar. Is he a character from Star Trek TOS?

In reality, he was Gene Roddenberry's first choice in name to be Captain of the USS Enterprise.
Later it was changed to Pike.

In fiction he was the first Captain of the USS Enterprise and was featured in one episode of Star Trek The Animated Series - 1973.

If your still hunting for books on Trek to read, Star Trek Log 7 has a neat little April bit, showing him in command of the construction of, and soon--first 5 year mission of-- the good ship Enterprise.

Heres a picture of the animated version:

Robert April - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki

The Star Trek encyclopedia later showed a picture of Gene Rodenberry as April. I liked this idea and made a Rear Admiral April figure using James Brady's great Roddenberry
      head sculpt.
(My customs usually revolve around storylines I think up...April was made a rear admiral when he was called back to active duty for reasons too lengthy to get into here.)

Cool. Is that Robert April as the mentor type figure for Kirk in the new Star Trek trailers? (or might it be George Kirk)

In the movie it is Captain Christopher Pike, I do believe.
          It's all good!

Yep, Unless there is some amazing surprise waiting for us they are using Pike in the movie as the first Captain of the Enterprise...One of many points in Trek history that are being reworked by the premise of the new film.

Robert April is listed as the first captain of the Enterprise(Gene Roddenberry is used for his likeness)at her commissioning in 2245 I belive....
                Enterprises list of captains goes like this...Robert April..Christopher Pike..James Kirk...William Decker...Admiral James Kirk...Captain Spock..Captain Kirk
The new movie is probably going to change this but this is original canon.
