Star Trek. What The...?!

I have a Star Trek collectibles book that lists a lot of the fan written stories.
Back in the 70's, you would not believe how many fan Star Trek stories were homosexual related with Kirk and Spock as the stars.
I'm guessing Star Trek had a lot of gay fans back in the 70's

So this is Slash Fiction? That would explain a lot in terms of the imagery.
During a seminar class in second year film school, I was introduced to the idea of "audience based analysis" of "texts" via a presentation that began with the thesis that Kirk, Bones and Spock were in a Gay Love Triangle. I imagine that it was purposefully provocative and in my mind it was completely ridiculous, 'cause Kirk's all about the ladies and Spock's pretty asexual unless he goes into heat right?
So they proceed to walk us through an episode (I can't remember which one), while commenting on the sub-text of what was REALLY going on in the hostile exchanges between Spock and Bones, punctuating the more campy lingering gazes that was the style of television production back then. By then end, I could really see how an audience takes the ambiguity within the space of any given "text" like Star Trek and co-opts it for their own purposes. In this case, the Gay Trek Community of the 70's interpreting the liberalism of the Star Trek future for their "cause".
So Wertham was right! To some people Batman and Robin are Homosexuals. Doesn't take away from the enjoyment that most of us have for the mainstream Hetero-Kirk (although it does give us pause to think now that there is an omnisexual Captain Jack Harkness running around Doctor Who's neck of the woods). So good for them and their Gay Trek. Nothing Wrong With That!
What is Horribly, Horribly Wrong is Fabio-Spock on a Unicorn looks like really well rendered, but conceptually bad Fan-Wank (in this case, literally I guess). Customizers, don't be getting any ideas with your Dolfi Wigs and White Breyer Horses now!Comment

I used to spend some time at a Starsky and Hutch fan forum. It actually took me a while to realize that all the other posters were either a) Middle-aged women with unresolved crushes on one or both of them b) Gay people who had slash fantasies about the boys. I'm not against this sort of thing, whatever gets you through the night. It just kind of limited the stuff we could talk about. Nobody wanted to talk about the car, the clothes, the guns, or any of that stuff. It was kinda boring.Comment

Oh, regarding the reading of texts and so forth.
I've done cultural studies also. It basically takes them a term to tell you a few simple things about the way people use media. People see what they want to see and when they are disenfranchised they just interpret mainstream media their own way. Alot of the other stuff is either common sense or paranoid BS.
This is how it works. You create something. Obviously you don't create it in a vacuum so some stuff, like your weird hang-ups, come through. Whatever your intentions, once somebody else gets their paws on it, it lives in their mind, their way. Of course, they are also a product of various influences, so they will see it their own way based on the stuff their mind collected throughout their life. There isn't a chicken or an egg, it's more a tug of war. If you get to University and you never realized that you are being mainipulated, mainly just to sell you stuff, you need to go back to High School.Comment

LOL! I remember that site. I think it was taken down!
These are refered to as K/S fanzines I think, ( K/S instead of S&M). David Gerrold mentions it in his book, The World of Star Trek. These were so predominant in the 70's that in the novelization for Star Trek - TMP, Rodenberry has a footnote written by Kirk stating he is close with Spock, but has always, "preferred the creature known as woman". I always got the impression that these fanzines were written by lesbianes who had peeniz envy.Comment

Although I think the difference between that Trek unicorn thing/Slash FanFic, is that it is well documented that there might very well have been actual strong Authorial Intent to imbed the "Sapphic" undertones in by her creator (given his personal life). Ditto Xena.
