Let's face it: on TOS, they had no money for anything fancy.
If they could have, the Klingons would have had two heads and four arms.
And Sulu would have had eyes on stalks, etc.....
So it was a natural progression to make changes.
Even TNG had budget restraints, hence all the "ridged noses" aliens.
Personally, I loved the way Klingons progressed, getting a whole culture, and real depth.
And they were real actors, not "Meesa the meanest Klingon in the whole Galaxy, Captain Anni!"
