I was glad with the change.

TOS Klingons looked like ordinary Mexicans...not out worldly extraterrestrials.

The ones I had problems with were the Romulans.

Why in the hell did they have to have that annoying bumpy forehead for?

Aren't they cousins of the Vulcans?

I thought they gave Vulcans that bumpy forhead thing during the old new Trek. Back when alien=guy with headbumps.

        >but at the same time they just disregard or don't care about the continuity screw-ups of Zephram Cochran and the entire First Contact movie.

That bothered me too. He was originally Alpha Centauran, wasn't he?

          Correct,
If im remembering correctly, Human's were exploring space (without warp drive) and they encountered a ship in trouble from Alpha Centauri.
The Humans helped get them home and they soon became friends.
The next race discovered were the Vulcan's ...
Then the Andorian's - and finally the Tellarites.

These five members came together to be the original UFP

I still choose to think that the Federation was forged out of the Romulan war described in Balance of Terror.

The old continuity accepted that, although Mike's summation is how it went down. The Vulcans introduced the Andorians to the Centaurans and Humans, (which I think is how it kinda still went down on Enterprise) then the Tellarites found the rest, and they formed the Federation. The Edoans and Caitians were found during the initial 5 year expansion period and joined up.

My problem is back in the 80's I took a lot of stuff as canon that really shouldn't be.

I used own almost every single tech manual and reference book that was ever made.

One of my faves was World's of the Federation.

Great reference book, but I think I was the only person who ever read it

Seems to me the first time I saw these new Klingons was in a commercial for McDonalds. I think they were speaking some Klingonese like: "Klee kla so, Mcdonalds" or something like that. LOL
I don't remember if I was upset or just didn't care. More curious than anything else probably. Like: "what happened to the Klingons?"
I liked ST but wasn't like my whole life or anything. I don't think I even saw TMP until it came on HBO.

I remember not liking the refurbished Enterprise being all white in TMP.

At the time, I thought it being white was too much of a Star Wars ripoff.

I have seen and read many times Gene Roddenberry explaining that getting and then keeping star trek on TV was a constant battle.Budget decisions were a daily problem for him and the producers.Remember...he pitched star trek for quit a while before anyone showed interest and then only Desi-Lu was willing to help him.He made a first pilot and it didn't test well, and then was lucky enough for some NBC chiefs to give him a second chance and redo it with changes. It got picked up and then a year later Lucy and Desi finally called it quits with Paramount picking up all Desi-Lu productions(thats how they got it).Now the pressure was on Gene to show that Star trek was worth the money being put into it.So I'm sure ,if not the main reason for creative decisions budget played a big part in them.I have seen interviews with John Colicos saying he created the look of Klingon's(he was the first one)but he was known for bragging. Sure he had input but I don't think he made the final choices.Gene didn't know what star trek was going to become,so he didn't worry about its long term future.Star trek was the first TV series to become what it has(part of our culture)so some changes are going to have to happen.
Enterprise season 4's explanation was quit good for why the Klingon appearance change and should become canon. Also Wrath of Khan( the best TOS movie)made a big change to canon(Chekov)so why can't First Contact(TNG's best)
                        if it makes good sense.

I was a Star Wars kid, so that to me was the most exciting part of the movie. Didn't really bother me, although I do remember noting the inconsistencies with the Kilngon Mego. I do prefer aliens to look more "alien" than human.

The one thing that always bugged me about ST was the Aliens. It seemed like the longer the series (all of them) went on, the more "alien" the aliens got. It was almost like, are there any others that look human at all out there?
                            Makes the Vulcans look normal.
Seemed like they were just trying to outdo the last alien every time: "Hey lets see how many facial appliances we can stick on this new alien to make them look even weirder than the last ones".

As was mentioned before, it was when every alien during the TNG era had some sort of nose ridge, that it became annoying. Millions of species and humans are the only ones who lucked out and got smooth noses?
                              It's all good!
