I think I remember the same was said about Superman Returns (before it was released) ... hmmm, 3 years later and still no Superman Returns sequels ?
I was going to say the same thing optioning a writer and a director is a long way from production (we had 20 years of superman scripts and directors before Returns) and the 2nd Singer one is on indefinite hold.
They want star trek to grab a new generation of fans, thats why its action oriented.Todays movie goers need more stimulation than previous generations.I've read some articles that say the movie is pretty true to canon but with some twists needed for modern viewers. It said a sixties reboot didn't test well and looked "not modern enough "for todays standards. They are tying the sixties to today by making the USS KELVIN the next generation of starship after Archer's Enterprise(it has a sixties look and feel to it)and Pike's Enterprise more to what we would expect a futuristic starship by todays standards to look and feel like.People who have already seen the movie say it works well by todays expectations....I hope so
Yeah.... that bugs me 'cos it looks just like every other movie out there.
>is it worth all the backflips to tie EVERYTHING into continuity?
No, 'cos it makes the universe into a very small place. It starts feeling like everything that matters only happenes to a small number of people. And that those events all sdpring from a small number of starting points. Even having all the crew know each other ahead of time; didn't they do anything interesting BEFORE becoming part of the crew? Apparently not. Kinda bugs me to see Kirk and Uhura meet ahead of time; she's a Lieutennant, he's a Captain.... if we assume Star Fleet works like the navy that's a HUGE difference in rank. There are five or six steps in between. So.... Kirk went right from cadet to Commander?!?!?
It's all little stuff, but it adds up to sap the flavour out of the story. It's funny; when I watch the original show I can see all sorts of militarisms that I hadn't before. They pipe dignitaries onto the ship. Senior crew interact with senior crew, juniors with juniors. There are a few scenes where crew form up for formal discourse.... Stuff nobody would notice (unles you've done time in the military) but it lends a certain feel to things. The new one doesn't seem to have that sort of thing. It seems like the same halfhearted kinda stuff everybody makes. "We want to present a structure for the setting, but it'll go away when we need more face time for the hot young actors."
