You know, I was on a real personal high the night I saw Star Trek 5, new car, great relationship, life was very good. I look back at that night with a lot of fond memories.
So, by and large, my memories of that film are rather rose coloured. I've seen it since and wondered if I saw a different film.

5 has its moments. The new bridge design was great. The shuttles were cool. Liked the combat uniforms idea.....Too bad the story never really came together.
This was a strike year for Hollywood. So that hurt the movie, I'm sure, but the forced humor was the downfall of the movie. But if you can get around the space boots, Scotty the buffoon, warping to the center of the galaxy in under a day, among other holes in the script...It is a nice plot. I certainly think McCoy's scene with his father is some great acting.
Ugh! I can't even think about this movie without getting irritated. I don't think I ever felt more disappointed coming out of a theatre. Something I loved had just died horribly.
Star Trek V was notorious (for many years) as being a huge disaster and "the worst Star Trek movie ever" --- but lately that title has been degraded since the release and flops of Insurection and Nemesis.
I'm glad, because no matter how bad V was, it was still more watchable then Insurection and Nemesis.
V had some awful effects (they couldn't get ILM for the whole movie), and some really embarrassing parts (old Uhura doing her fan dance. She's very attractive for an older lady, but c'mon), but the scenes of Kirk, Spock and Bones camping were just fun. It had some nice character bits. A lot of people hate Sybok and even Rodenberry considered him out-of-canon, but like was said earlier, the flashback scenes where he makes Spock and Bones see their "pain" was really well done. Kirk's line about "needing his pain" was great. The ending was kind of a dud, but I do remember Kirk's line about "Why does God need a starship" so I guess it made some kind of impression.
In hindsight, I like it better than Generations. Kirk was TOTALLY out of character in that movie. They had him acting like a dandy interior designer, not Starfleet's greatest hero.
