Star Trek 4 The Voyage Home appreciation thread

I just watched Star Trek 4 The Voyage Home last night.
I've owned it forever but haven't watched it in quite a few years.
Man, that movie brought back good memories of the 80's .....

Trek was running high and EVERYBODY loved Trek at the time .....
Even non Trekkies loved The Voyage Home.

The crew still looked young enough that it wasn't sad watching the old timers just go through the motions ......

I think Voyage Home was Star Trek's last and biggest hoorah ........

Undiscovered Country is also loved by fans (and me) but I think it lacks something... Like Wrath of Kahn, Undiscovered Country took itself too seriously.

Final Frontier went the opposite way and was one big disaster.

Star Trek IV The Voyage Home ......
IMO, the last great hoorah for Star Trek.

I agree. The Voyage Home is running neck-to-neck with Wrath of Khan as the best ST movie in my opinion. Voyage Home is still fun to watch and has held up well. The crew (as you said) still looked pretty good and the humor wonderful. The movies that came after seemed to suffer in comparison, JOHN

There is no such thing as good memories of the 80's.

Having lived through the 60's and 70's the 80's were just plain awful.

I don't agree that Trek 4 was the last great hurrah. Trek 6 was great and First Contact was superb.

This one is one of my faves of the movies too. It's just too funny. As Trek fans, we accept and appreciate the rules and ways of our fave space traveling heroes. We know warp speed, talking computers, and transporters. But what happens when they land on Earth in the 20th century is hysterical! I love the bus scene, and when Spock learns to swear! Too funny!

I also think the story was structured really well if you look at the nuts and bolts of it.

Right down to having the 2 most unshown characters (Uhura and Chekov) teamed up -- this way there's no main star to outshine them in their scenes.

It was really put together well.

            Great movie.
They all seemed to be enjoying themselves, too.
Nimoy is an excellent director, a true Star Trek ambassador.
And he didn't mind letting the rest of the cast shine....

I can't sit through it, it's too cutesy poo for me. I admit that it has some good laughs but I prefer WOK and Undiscovered Country to this one.

I love VH, and I appreciated the horrors of commercial whaling being brought to light.

My only issue with the film was the way some of the Enterprise crew played fast and loose with their interactions with characters from the "past" with absolutely no regard for the consequences on the future (their present).

Me too. 2, 6, 4 & 8 are my top ST movies faves...in that order. Though 8 gives 4 a run for it's money. Still gotta give the original crew the nod.

Definitely a good movie, and though I don't despise Star Trek V, it was not a good follow up to this movie. I also was very disappointed that in STV the Enterprise-A bridge changed from the cool chrome look of the bridge as seen in the last 30 seconds of STIV.
                        It's all good!

The scene were Scotty makes that 80s Macintosh Plus compute beyond its capability by just typing fast...was beyond unbelievable (but funny nevertheless, lol)...

YouTube - Macintosh Plus in StarTrek

Like one of the posts says there...

I can watch ST4 and I can enjoy it for what it is, but to me, ST4 was the first big sign it was over. Some of the humor was really good, some of it seemed way too forced and was just terrible. Since the characters were out of their element, I can deal with it, but it gave them the "bright idea" to carry it on and do it again in ST5, and I still remember coming out of the theatre after that one going ***? as well as pretty much everyone else in the theatre.

The characters just weren't who they were. Sure, Trek had done humor episodes in the past, but no one was "silly". ST4 had a lot of silly. Really, would Kirk ever answer a communicator hail saying "what is it, I thought I told you never to call me?". I think not. If he ordered radio silence, he wouldn't have whined when it was broken.
