Warning....ravings of a madman. Spoiler info may be involved!!!!!
With the massive amount of info we now have on the films plot (and including the Trek:Countdown comic), I am going to stick my neck out and make some educated guesses.
First, Nero isnt after Kirk as reported. I used to think he was after Spock, and the evidence definitely points towards a grudge against Spock, but I think hes actually after the Vulcan people as a whole. Allow me to extrapolate:
The galactic cataclysm in Countdown----Looks to me like this happens. Spock goes back to try and salvage the future...Nero goes back in time to revenge the death of his wife, his race, and the galaxy.
It has been reported that the new film is in continuity with Trek canon. How can this be, when we've seen so clearly that it is not? Simple, the writers have destroyed Trek continuity by destroying the universe! The black hole created (see Countdown) sucked in the galaxy as a whole and regenerates it somehow. Maybe, it just spits it out somewhere else? I'm not sure exactly, but whatever happens, it obviously a gimmick that essentially allows the writers of the new movie (and whatever follows) to set the meter back to zero.
Spock and Nero must try to stop the cataclysm, but their attempts fail. Somehow the resulting black hole hurls them back, intact, to the 2260's. As mentioned above...it's not their 2260's, but it will do for what Nero plans.
Now, in Countdown, its mentioned a rare element (found on Vulcan) is needed to stop this cataclysm. I'm betting the extraction of this material is difficult, and may be dangerous to the stability of the Vulcan planet itself. I have the feeling they get some (perhaps too late?) of this element, but it's not enough to stop the black hole from forming. Nemo, understandably enraged, decides to rip Vulcan apart if he has to, and get all of this material he can get his hands on. The plan being to travel back to the future (heh!) , do the voodoo he needs to do to the collapsing star, and save his family.
Even though this is'nt his timeline anymore, the pointy eared boy scout acts to save this Vulcan by looking up some "old friends" and help them stop Nero. These folks arent exactly as we ..or he...remembers them, but it's all he has to work with.
Perhaps by the end of the film, Spock manages to save the day, and not only saves this time line, but his own. In short this new Trek will save our old Trek, figuratively and literally?! Thus shoehorning this new version into canon, while leaving us "old folks" with our Trek intact!
whatcha' think?
