Most surreal moments in movie/TV sci-fi

    What are yours?

For me, a great surreal moment is in Space:1999's "Space Brain" when the Moonbase Alpha was being flooded with soap suds that were supposed to be part of the immune system of the giant alien inteligence they are going through.

It was amazing how Martin Landau and the gang were able to earnestly convey a sense of danger with what essentially looked like Moonbase Alpha's washing machine overflowing. The use of "The Planets" music helped too.

"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

Supes carrying Mariel Hemingway back to Earth in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace...

"Look ma, no spacesuit, no oxygen, no burning up during re-entry!"

When I first saw that scene...my jaw dropped, rolled up my eyes...then I started laughing uncontrollably...

Lost In Space - The Antimatter Man.
The scene where they're walking on the smoke bridge between the matter universe and the antimatter universe.

I'm not sure surreal is the right word for any of this, I'd go with "unintentional Camp".

I mean, I think the ending to the Prisoner is surreal, I think Spock's brain being stolen is camp.

The most surreal scene I can think of is in Doctor No, when they play the Bond theme while he's putting his clothes away in a hotel.

            Your choice:

YouTube - Luke makes out with his sister

YouTube - The Star Wars Holiday Special - (1978)

YouTube - William Shatner 'Rocket Man' (1978) - BEST QUALITY!

I was going to mention that. If we are going for camp, I would say Land of the Giants. Apparently every super-sized alien and episode had a desk with a large pencil and black telephone.
              It's all good!

I use surreal for the Space:1999 episode because of it being bizarre and dreamlike. It's not camp, to me, but like Picasso on acid doing a science fiction show.

Zardoz is a movie that is also surreal.

You see that's a fine line, everyone is acting straight faced while fighting dish washing bubbles, I kind of find that campy, albeit unintentionally. I get how someone can see it as surreal.

I find Zardoz unintentionally funny as well. Something about Sean Connery running around in a diaper....

I've always thought of surreal to mean Bizzarre and Dreamlike

Sam Jones' Flash Gordon would fit in that catagory perfectly

                        Say;

We've mentioned the prisioner; but nobody's mentioned Rover yet! Hell, durned near that whole SERIES was surreal. I also found most of Max Headroom surreal, but that's 'cos I've been watching it all happen over the last 15 years....

                        Don C.

Surreal that someone thought of writing and producing that as an episode!

I actually think of the crying plants every time I mow my lawn. Maybe I'm surreal.
                            It's all good!
