>I don't know why a female Starbuk is such a big reach,
My only problem is the name, since it implies male-ness. The actual character is no better or worse (or really DIFFERENT) from anyone else on the show.)

Careful here, Hector..: It's really a 'to-each-his-own' type viewpoint. Even ignostics and athesists don't necessarily care for what some shows throw in to grab the 'lowest-common-denominator' audience."Too much drinking...too much sex"
Hey...this is not a kiddie show like the original...that's why it's shown at night only (and cable).
Too much drinking and too much sex is alright by me, lol.
What is this? The Bible belt forums or something???
Please...

Now I HATE the original crap even more...and more...thanks to this thread.
It's simply a matter of taste. Thanks for the input though. I do agree on the Starbuck character. This new series is simply 'just another show'.
And it's not just a old classic show vs. new show thing: I thought Firefly was outstanding.., and loved the female characters..!

Whoa, whoa let's not get on Xena's case here.
I don't know why a female Starbuk is such a big reach, the character a tough cookie and lots of woman in this world get male nicknames placed upon them. I think that Katy Sackoff has made her version of Starbuk totally real and endearing.
I'm not sure if it's overt sexism as just simply an aversion to changing the original series. On paper, it looks like exploitation, it's what comics do. I was skeptical originally but then I gave it a shot.
Well, Dirk Benedict for one. I liked his version too but in the original context. Starbuk is female for a lot of reasons in the new series, not just so she's a "hot chick".Who cares about Dirk Benedict?Leave a comment:

IMO most of the hatred toward the new Starbuck is outright sexism. It's pretty hard to so severely challenge your average sci-fi boy's notions of femininity. Tough women are great as long as they have long flowing hair and wear gold bustiers.

As a fan of both series for different reasons, I find all the hate towards the new pretty ludicrous at times. The original is a product of it's time and let's face it, it's pretty darned disco and the new one is a product of it's time with all it's grunge.
Some of the criticism back and forth is very valid but a lot of it just equates to nerd rage over changes made. Which I'm totally prone to by the way, I ain't hucking rocks out of my glass house. I just don't have the emotional attachment to this property. I've got my classic series DVDs and they're fun but I also watch the new series.
I personally hope the classic fans do get their movie, I'll go see it. I understand how disapointing it was to have that snatched away from you like that.
As a fan of Logan's Run, I had Singer do the exact same thing to me. He was going to make a new movie that would have kept fans of the movie and the book happy, now? I'm gonna say that the new movie will likely make me sad.Leave a comment:

Boy it is a good thing that we don't talk politics on this forum. I would hate to see what that would be like if we are all getting at each others' throats over "Battlestar Galactica." Can't we all just get along?

I will say something that you haters of the new show will appreciate (gulp)...
I don't like the new Starbuck either.
No...not because she's a chick...but because she's just a hard up ***** with too much bloody testosterone...and not a single hint of estrogen...that's why.
The single most unfeminine heterosexual female in the history of television.
I was happy when she supposedly died...and quickly saddened when she reappeared.
Bloody bullocks.

The best thing about the new series is it is ending!!!
Sorry to all the new BSG lovers but.I can't stand it!
Starbuck is not a chick!!!
Lets reimagine Star wars, only this time Han-Solo is a girl.
W.T.F. David B is right they had strong female cast members in the original and they should have stayed with that.
Sorry just how I feel. And the fact that they cheaped out on affects with human looking aliens was just a crap move.Leave a comment:

The thing I like more with the new series than the old is everything isn't always tied up in a nice little bow at the end. Old series it always seemed to be "Yah,here come Starbuck to save the day,the end." Nowadays you have no idea what's going to happen and to whom. I like the twists and turns. It's what brings you back.Leave a comment:

I was reading this but I think theirs a little confusion if I read it right Bryan Singer and producer Tom Desanto version was alot like richard Hatch's vision that he wrote in his novels which I loved.Ron Moore and David Eick are the pin heads that re amagined everything.Tom Desanto who is one of the producers of the first and new Transformers film is a hardcore fan I heard he has one of the biggest original Galactica collections in his office in Hollywood the script he wrote for the dead 2001 continuation had the blessing of Glen Larson and Richard Hatch I have read parts of the script online over the years and the first scene was a galactica bridge kinda worn from years of space use and a guy lighting a wood match moving towards his cigar revealing slowly the face and a seated Dirk Benedict as Captain Starbuck man talking about this has opened alot of wounds for me that I had forgotten 8 years agoLast edited by kennermike; Feb 23, '09, 1:53 PM.Leave a comment:

FINALLY !I know I'm not the only one here who still prefers the original series to the current reboot. IGN is reporting a feature film is in the works that will continue the story of the original series. I for one am overjoyed!
IGN: Battlestar Galactica Movie Exclusive
I am so glad they will go back to the original series . Hey any idea if Dirk Benedict or any other other actors will get cameo's ? Anyways I am glad to see this . I have never been able to get into the reboot on Sci-Fi .Leave a comment:

Agreed, agreed, and agreed. Yes, I thought Richard's books were great and had a genuine feel as to the spirit and direction of any revival.I generally hate any re-imagening of a series that worked well in the first place. I tend to call the new show that "space show" and blank out when the characters are refuered too by name.
the general feeling was to make Starbuck and boomer female was to have strong roles for women. bla, the original had Athena and sheba and Casi as very strong women roles. Bommer was black but they had to make it an asian women. a cylon no less. it just lost me. and the time under cylon rule on that planet was horrible and the producers shoulda named the planet iraq. cause that sure seemed the way it was mirroring.
haveing read hatch's books and enjoyed the hell outta them, i felt that's the way they should've gone.
don't get me wrong, i love the scifi of the new one, but i don't caLL it Galactica. only tingi absolutly hate is the Vipers and the whole thruster jet thing, i don't know just irked me
Trust me, the new show was not Galactica. Let's face it, Singer was more concerned with using the original name to spark interest/controversy in the new series, that's all.
He could have simply called it some other space name, and there would have been no interest among the sci-fi community, other than 'Hey, Singer's doing a new series'. Other than picking out some concepts and background from the Original, it was not faithful to the intent or flavor of the Original.
Whether you liked the reimaged show or not, that simple morsel of truth is painfully obvious.
