    V

Right now here in Belgium they're showing V the mini series again on the Sci-Fi channel. I had forgotten all about that one. Anyone see it when they were a kid?

I saw all the V stuff when it debuted--i.e. when I was a "kid".

I thought it was so dang interesting.

I bought the books based on the series and everything.

I remember liking it a lot because there multiple plot lines
that dealt with "betrayal" of some sort---good guys, bad guys--
betrayal back and forth---heck, it's where I learned the term
    "5th column" for crissakes.

Also, it re-introduced me to the incredible MICHAEL IRONSIDE
who I'd just recently seen in "Spacehunter: Adventures in the
Forbidden Zone" and who would go on to co-star in one of my
all-time fave movies TOTAL RECALL and then go on to voice
    the animated DARKSEID. Awesome

I had just graduated from hi school when V premiered, but I only caught bits and pieces of it, just b/c I was just so busy at that time, and worked nights 3 days a week. I did see it on the Sci-Fi Channel when Robert Englund was hosting. I really liked it. Better than the series b/c they had those alien voices.

I tried watching it when it first premiered.

I really wanted to like it, but it was just so darn boring.

Never did see the end ... and I don't feel like I missed anything.

I haven't seen in it in a while---I wouldn't be surprised if the
pacing was drawn out. The show's quality/execution was probably mid-grade
---but the IDEA was pretty much excellent---especially for a
kid like me---it kept me curious---I was wondering the next time
someone's fake face might get ripped off or a hot female alien would
strip in front of the main hero (Donovan aka Marc Singer) or that they'd
catch one of the bad guys eating a mouse---- or something like that.
There was a lot of that "cool" stuff spinkled throughout the series.

As an adult---that might not be enough to keep me watching

As far as the "end"---if I remember correctly---after the first mini-series
----I don't even think there was definitive end.

And then there was THE FINAL BATTLE series.

          I forget, really.

On the show, some of the kids had action figures of the "Visitors". I wonder if any of those showed up on Ebay, or toy shows. I mean, someone has to own those, right?

I don't know about the actual props from the actual V set...but I've seen
V figures----the kind you'd find for sale in a store before on, like,
              Ebay or something.

I don't know their history---what company or how many or when they
              were made though.

BTW HardyGirl just a little V tidbit----did you know that the creator/writer
of V was the same guy responsible for adapting THE HULK for his 70s
              TV show?

I thought of that when I saw you post in this thread initially because I know
you're a fan of that version of THE HULK.

I liked the mini-series a lot, especially when Michael Ironside joined.

The series that followed was crap, though...

                  Hmmmm....

I was a kid when it came out, and I wanted to like it.... I TRIED to like it, but what killed it for me were the rampant "action-isms." They lost me when the Visitors attacked the mountain hideout of the resistance. (End of the first episode, beginning of the second....?) So.... the Visitors come in with an armed space shuttle, shoot a few things up, and the hero runs out with her PISTOL, stands in the middle of the road and shoots it down. Er.... didn't the aliens invent targeters? What is that thing made out of? It can survive re-entry but not a 9mm slug?

Stuff like that bugs me 'cos it makes the bad guys useless. You KNOW the writers are gonna fudge things so the heroes win, even when they shouldn't. I HATE stories like that. No tension.

The ideas behind the show were okay. I've seen a ton of "human resistance vs alien" stories over the years, but the Visitors were interesting. Once the series started they fell into the "bigger and better" trap, where every few episodes required a new, earth-shattering revelation to keep the story going. (Mostly 'cos the characters were pretty generic, so you didn't have too much to work with if you wanted to get more into things that way.) So they added the Star Child, (who had superpowers for some reason,) the red dust (which would have to somehow become ineffective next season.... OH NO! What will we do NOW?!?!?) and hints of a GREATER alien menace in the wings.

Well, there's the very cool 12 inch, which I have. It has a human face mask that you can pull over the reptile head.

The Robot Chicken skit was funnier. That explains alot on why celebs act the way they do.

*in Johnny Carson speak* I did not know that. Thanks Huedell. Yes, I am a fan of the Bill Bixby Hulk series.

And I really had no idea that anyone made V figures that were available to the general public.

LJN had planned a line of small figures and vehicles which only made it to prototype stage. It was rumoured that the toys you see in the show are those actual prototypes, but some people who have tried to make comparisons say that isn't the case. LJN only ended up making a 12" Visitor figure (during a period when very few action figures were even made in that scale). I remember those figures haunting toy store clearance aisles for years.
