The obit does correctly point out the voice of the robot was another actor (Dick Tufled who i think also provided the voice for the robot in the abysmal lost in space film). So in reality this is sad but really the robot was just a suit without the voice it would be Twiki in buck season 2 a throw away.
When David Prowse dies it will be the same thing the guy wearing the Vasder suit is dead but the loss of the voice is what is important from an acting perspective

It just as bad as the 1971 Lost in space cartoon on ABC
the voice was aweful
No disrespect to Bob May, but I never considered him the Robot.
He was just a dunce in the suit.
When I seen him at autograph shows charging $25.00 a pop ... I thought to myself, who the hell would want his autograph ?
I was trying to be polite but as usual you put it better than I did. basically this is the guy pushing the prop around it's the voice (Tudelf) who delivers the classic DANGER WILL ROBINSON. May didn't even have a sense of humor. one time I heard him on Opie and Anthony and did he get MAD at Anthony for the Robot impressions

I knew this man for over fifteen years. He was a very respectable soul with a beautiful family whom we will continue to stay in touch with. He was far from a dunce. Nothing is more disrepectful than to criticize those whom you know nothing about and certainly not in death. I think you sir are the only "dunce" in this perspective.

Even though their voices were changed because they didn't meet the criteria of what the producers wanted. Those actors still had to deliver the lines to the actors.
May actually knew all the actors lines because he couldn't hear well in the suit so he memorized the script. Bill Mumy and the rest of the cast acted with Bob May not Tufeld who was just the overdubbed voice. So May was not some nobody in a suit...............

Thanks Hector. What most people don't realize is that dynamic between the robot and Dr. Smith was something Bob May and Jonathan Harris worked out. It wasn't originally part of the concept. But fans loved the chemistry May and Harris had developed, so as Season two unfolded Irwin Allen placed more emphasis on that relationship. Dick Tufeld was brought on set to witness May's performance so he could properly mimmick the exchange using his own vocal talents. It truly took two actors to bring the robot to life. But had May not taken the initiative to breath life into that costume, we wouldn't have the show as it is remembered today. And trust me, Bob May fully understood how some viewed him as simply a costume actor, but he knew better and brought the same enthusiasm to his remembrance of the part as he did when he first put on the treads. He wasn't trying to take credit where credit wasn't due. But he did, properly so, want people to know where he was involved in the creative process. He was performing those lines, not just speaking them for vocal queues.
On a sad note, his death was not fully explained in the detail that it was deserving. The Mays lost their home in those fires that spread through California and Bob and his family was not given much time to collect up many things before his home was destroyed. In the process he was the victim of smoke inhalation which created a string of medical conditions that ultimately led to her premature death. It is a very sad ending to a man who was a beautiful soul.
