    Star Trek Reboot

Okay I haven't seen a discussion this out here. I am sure there was one, but I did not see it. After seeing the the Trailer For this spring's Star Trek I kinda am a little excited. ( I'm pretty sure everyone has seen this by now. ) I know there are Loyalists that will immediately dismiss this film considering the entire TNG crew is alive and in somewhat good shape that another TNG Film really should have been made. You will also get the argument that those characters are Shatner, Kelly, Nimoy, Nichols, Takei, Doohan, and Koenig. They as actors defined those characters. I think after Insurrection and Nemesis not being very good they realized that a new direction was needed. I also think that they see how the TOS is still so popular , and why not reboot as it give them the ability to tell the story again , slightly different , and opens up the ability to carry on through the beginning and keep going up and through the other series again either via Movie or TV series. Personally I really hoped to see a big film that incorporated all the series in some shape or form. TOS,TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. A Way to better fit them or tie them together. I look forward to this reboot though because I think Technology will bring it to a new level, bring better back story to the characters and hopefully draw some new fans to the base. What does everyone else think ?

Well.... I kinda think the opposite will happen. The new technology will bring busy looking designs and distracting special effects, the back stories will be generic soap opera and most people think Trek is for nerds already.

I'm not excited because I see nothing different then Enterprise here.

Enterprise was a reboot too and look what happened to that.

It's the same old song ......

Just another pretender trying to pass itself off as "Star Trek"

I can agree with that. I do agree that it will be another enterprise. I think whats got me intesrested in the "curious factor ". I am curious as to what will be , what could be, and should be. I would have preferred another TNG film. Only this time use the same formula as in and Wrath Of Khan and First Contact. In my Opinion the Two best yet.

Funny thing is thats what people thought about POTA and the remake as well.

I'm reserving judgement until I actually see it. I understand why it's being done. After the last two TNG movies bombing they weren't going to take another chance with that. None of the other shows are popular enough to support a feature film.
By updating the look they want to bring in as many people as possible which would reinvigorate the franchise. At best I'd like to think this could bring in a whole new group of Trek fans.

That's EXACTLY how I felt about the POTA remake. Busy, distracting effects, the hot ape chick falls for Markie Mark for no real reason, and all the philosophy gets sucked out and replaced with the "evil despot" plot.

While it's always possible a remake isn't gonna suck the odds seem against it. The very idea that they'd go with a known name seems to indicate a lack of risk-taking right off the bat. And with something like this, where they throw in a lot of currently popular names from the story.... it all smacks more of marketing thas story telling. Doesn't mean it's GONNA suck.... but I'm already feeling uncomfortable.

I'd much rather see the story of a NEW ship, and a NEW crew; regardless of which era you set the story in. Trek isn't a cast of characters any more, it's a setting. There's a LOT of stuff you could do. They just don't.

From what I can tell, I think maybe a few here seem actually really excited for it but I think majority are just cautiously optimistic. Then the remaining are either loathing it or indifferent.

                That's my take, anyways.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Well, without beating a dead horse, as long as the movie gets that "feeling" I get from Star Trek, I'll be OK with the movie. I like a lot of the new cast as performers, but it will be how they present the story regardless of who they have play the characters. I wish that they could have gone with a new set of characters, but that is the fad in Hollywood these days. Use the familiar to get an audience in for a big first weekend.
                  It's all good!

I think it will be a great movie. Paramount knows this is their money property in the overall ST universe, so why not treat it like Bond? They can milk this version with a whole new generation that is familiar with the characters, but they aren't tied to them like we are. Kirk, Spock, McCoy etc will be what brings people to the theaters, as much as a new set of characters may appeal to some. Treat the characters fairly without trying to redo the actors' exact mannerisms, amd that goes for "cannon" as well, respect it but don't let it limit you, and we could have the makings for a great run of movies in the future. Don't like it, keep rewatching the same old stuff and debating it with your old folks home nurses.
