Question about editing on the early DW Classic Series

    I have a question.
It seems the editing in the Hartnell and Troughton years are horrible for removing and reshooting voice mistakes.

Example, Hartnell would regularly blow his line and just move one -- like someone would in a live stage production.

Question is, if these stories were not broadcast live, why didn't they have better editing and re-takes ?

It can't be that costly to reshoot a few 3 second scenes that have horrible mistakes that totally ruin the moment.

For those who claim it was reguarded as a kids show and they didn't care -- I dunno if I believe that.
Horrible editing even on kids show make the whole channel look sub-par

It seemed to get much better in the Troughton years ... and by the time Pertwee took over, the lousy editing was totally gone.

Hmmmm.... probably a combination of insane schedules, low budgets and apathy.

Maybe; but the crew might not have seen it that way; especially the higher-ups. Not everybody's dedicated to their job.

I'm no expert, but wasn't everything shot on actual film back then?
That made it a lot more costly than today.

        Nope,

With only one exception, every Doctor Who story in the sixties and seventies was made using interlaced studio video cameras and generally recorded onto Quad videotape. Film was only used for location shoots.

I think a big part of it was the sheer expense of filming back then. the cameras were massive, and took alot of crew to run and video tape was expensive. Almost every commentary on the hartnell dvd's talks about the fact the budget was alway strapped and I suspect retakes were discouraged right from the top, after all it was a "children's" program in the brass's eyes. The production schedule probably didn't help 4 days rehersal and 1 day to shoot is tight at best.

sometimes the flubs are charming and to be honest I wish I could have seen the hartnell's and troughton's when I was first getting into who (before i had a VCR) I probably wouldn't even have noticed them in 80. my adult mind catches missed queues and akward pauses frequently. Also great is the occasional moving set.
