    Galactica 1980 child actor shot

I guess being on Galactica 1980 was just the beginning of a slippery slope:

By GREG RISLING - Associated Press Writer

A call to police to investigate a gaunt, seedy-looking man with a boy was the beginning of a deadly end to four years on the run for Manuel Benitez, a former child actor who authorities say used a dumbbell to beat his girlfriend to death in 2004.

Benitez was shot and killed by police Tuesday night about two hours after he holed up in the back of a Chinese restaurant where he'd taken his 7-year-old son hostage. He was armed with two handguns and had threatened to harm the boy, police said.

Benjamin Everett, whose mother was slain when he was 3, was shot in the thigh as a SWAT team burst into the locked bathroom, but his wound was not considered life-threatening. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which was investigating the incident, released no information on who wounded the boy.

He was listed in stable condition at County-USC Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda said.

Benitez, 38, was a child actor who had small roles under the name Mark Everett in such 1980s fare as "Galactica 1980" and "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure." He was credited as "heavy metal boy" in the 1988 movie "Stand and Deliver."

Tragic ending to a very troubled and disturbing individual.

      Here's more on him:

      Wow...from this...

      To this...

He was obviously disturbed...I mean...the guy spoke four languages, Spanish, French, German, and even Cantonese...he was obviously no dummy...he could've certainly been employed quite nicely somwhere...but he chose a life of crime/drug dealing...and he didn't even tell his girlfriend about his child acting past...very odd and strange.

Perhaps he went through a horrific childhood...will never know.

Talk about a threat/danger to society...it's not as simple as saying
well "screw him", of course...but geez what a maniac, better off dead I'd
          say than harming anyone else.

Oh, man!!! He looked like me without beard. but he's tall and heavy weight than me, my front hair is thin than his. I'm 5'6" and 170lbs but my body is medium built and some muscles.

That's terrible news and very sad... what a shame!

Child Star Turned Fugitive Killed During Standoff
The hunt for one of AMW's Dirty Dozen came to an abrupt end in a strip mall in the Los Angeles suburb of El Monte, Calif. on Dec. 23, 2008. It's there that former child star turned fugitive Mark Everett made his last stand hours after police received a call about a suspicious man with a child.

The FBI tells AMW that the first call came in around 3 p.m. A short time later cops arrived at a shopping center at 3580 Santa Anita Ave. to conduct a welfare check. Both police and witnesses say they saw a man holding a gun and dragging a boy into a Mexican eatery then a Chinese restaurant. Investigators say that Everett was barely recognizable --looking thin and gaunt with salt and pepper hair.

The FBI reports that, Everett, dressed in a bomber jacked and armed with a revolver and another handgun, barricaded himself in the restaurant bathroom with his son, 7-year-old Benjamin. Investigators say that Everett seemed to be lucid at times but also made threats that he may harm Benjamin. The hostage standoff lasted two hours before police tossed in a flash-bang grenade in an attempt to rescue Benjamin and arrest Everett. When a crisis team attempted to enter the bathroom, shots were exchanged injuring young Benjamin and killing Everett.

Authorities carried Benjamin out of the restaurant and rushed him to a nearby hospital. The FBI says that the 7-year-old is recuperating and has been reunited with his maternal grandmother in time for Christmas. Investigators say that the boy looked to have multiple scrapes and may not have been living in the best conditions for the last few years. The Everetts' prior locations have not been ascertained just yet, authorities say. Meanwhile, the FBI says that Everett's mother, Elizabeth Velasco, has not been located. Velasco disappeared with her son after the 2004 murder of Stephanie Spears, Benjamin's mother.
His son is alive and safer, thanks GOD!
