What did you think of THE NEXT DOCTOR ?

Thanks to youtube, I just watched the Next Doctor.

Meh, not bad -- but nothing special either.

I did like the cameo clips of the 10 Doctors.
To me it finally 100% legitimized the New Series as true Who cannon.

Other then that, it was like any other Christmas episode of DW --- mediocre story with an over the top ending.

    I agree.
    Nothing special about this special.
A lot of noise and running around.
A supereasy way to take out Cybermen (why doesn't the Doc always have one of these pods with him?)

A pretty weak story, if you ask me. Too bad, cause Cybermen are my favourites....

I always liked classic series Cybermen, but am not a fan of new series ones.

Classic series Cybermen always had different agendas -- which made them interesting.

New series Cyberman just want to assimilate everyone all the time (Borg rip-offs).. making them a rather dull nasty.

I wish they'd someday bring back OUR Cybermen.

Caught this on Youtube today, although the better quality video I was watching got yanked midway and I only saw the end on a lesser vid with poor voice-synch (kinda like watching a Godzilla film).

I thought it was ok...any-Who is better than no-Who (or Cindy Lou Who, for that matter!). Didn't expect any major changes or permanent companions. Cybermen are not my favorite villains...would like to see a really classic villain show up again, like the Celestial Toymaker or the Yeti. Or just have the Doctor meet up with another old companion like Jamie or Susan. Better yet, a new Two Doctors team-up, maybe 5 & 10 (hey, they could fight Daleks in Woolworth's!)

Was kinda unclear as to what the Cyber-animals were (monkeys, dogs, urchin beggar children?) and as to exactly why all the Cybermen disintegrated along with the nasty villainess (and shouldn't she have been the Cyber-Queen, not Cyber-King), and where did the big thingie go (probably will be revealed in another show down the road?).

So what, now we wait for a mid-Summer special, a late-summer special, next Christmas and the 11th Doctor takes over? Hoping with a new Doctor we get 2 or 3 companions again, and less of the companion's family and home lives.

My nephew's roommate downloaded the whole ep from some file-sharing computer in England, watched it yesterday.. It was alright.. Great to see David Tennant in action, as always, now that his tenure is now limited.

I loved seeing the Cybermen (were always my favorite villain), but do agree with johnnystorm that they seriously could use some other villains, long long since gone.

A villain from the 2nd, 3rd, even 4th Doctor would have been cool. When I heard the earlier incarnations were going to be shown, I expected JUST a bit longer scene than just a 1 second glimpse... Just a bit disappointed there.

I liked it overall thanks to the internet I don't have to wait till next year to see it.

I do think that new who has made it easier for the Dr to beat the classic enememies ( but I blame the 45 min format) and I do like that the Cybus cybermen are easier to beat than the old ones since it opens the door for a new (old history) cyberman.

of course how did they get the history of the old doctor if they aren't the old cyberman?

you might have misseed it but Tennet surmised they stole it from the Daleks while they were both in the void

Tennet called the big thing a Cyber King Dreadnaught. I still don't get why she wasn't cyber queen either

the pod was a piece of dalek tech the cybermen used to escape the void
he used the pod to break their link to the earth dinemsion so in essence all the cyber stuff got pulled back into the void preserviing history from anaomolous tech

                        and now my opinion:

all these christmas specials are a let down. This year was less so for me has I had a basic plot ideas based on a couple audio Dramas (but the way the 2 plots were combined was clever)

These new cyberman are BORING. The borg thing is really overdone now. They haven't explained to me how their tech got so advanced so fast (to challenge the DALEkS or build) since they were developed by an earth bound company. even classic cybermen were always well behind the daleks as a technological threat

Kit Peddler sort of introduced the idea of other species conversion in 10th planet when the cybermen planned to make us like them since were were sister races. From time to time it was shown of them controlling people (moonbase, wheel in space) or converting people (Attack of the cybermen which I think predated the borg in TNG by 2 years) but like mike said they were more clever (and subtle) and had subplots about their war with the rutans or whomever other than just converting people.

We'll see what happens down the road when Doctor #11 takes over. I think David Tennant has been an excellent Doctor, rating him #2 on my list...but I'm hoping when another series starts we go back to a Tardis full of companions, maybe the Doctor's Daughter as well. I think it was always helpful to have a companion that was smart as the Doctor, who understood the tech without having it explained. Such as Susan, Nyssa, Romana, etc. ...as opposed to the companions that stood there with their mouth open looking stupid (Donna Noble, I'm looking at you!).

Anything instead of the CONSTANT return to Earth stories to visit Jackie Tyler, Martha's obnoxious family, Donna's grandfather. God, how boring- why go anywhere if all the villains just show up and knock on your door with the morning paper? Remember when you couldn't ever get back with the Tardis to a specific time or place?

And I'd love to see an historical story again...thought we were getting one in Pompeii but then the fire monsters showed up. Would love to see a return to the old west or a Civil War tale with no aliens, just regular bad guys. Would be a change!

I give Donna a pass - there is alot of precedent for an uneducated or technologically backward companion to force the doctor to explain (really for the kids) I offer as evidence - Dodo, Polly, Jamie, Victoria, Jo Grant, Harry Sullivan, Leela, Peri, Ace. There are many who are contemporary to the viewer who are clever and only need the tecnhobable explained (Like Sarah jane Smith, or Ian chesterton)

I agree about the family visits ENOUGH already. Pertwee's doctor had a "reason" to be there constantly in the new show it is so obviously a way to cut the budget on sets.

The historical dramas were always LOW ratings compared to sci fi ones. This was why they stopped making them. Histrical events have remained constant as settings for Who but true historicals are rare. There were several in the Hartnell era of the ones that still exist aztecs and Reign of terror are ok but Gunfighters and Romans are pretty awful. based on the stories that exist Crudades was probably brilliant. I am pretty sure the last true historical one was Black orchid in 82 (one i never liked), and the last before that was Highlanders.

I also prefered when the doctor was a lost wanderer (but I think JNT gave full control of the tardis to Colin bakers doctor) but since he can go where he likes they could very easily revisit places where old companions were left to see how they are faring (Say earth in the year 2190 to see Susan) or even visit Ian or the Brig the next time he is on contemporary Earth (Both actors are alive still)

I wouldn't mind some more historical episodes, but i'd love to see some of them take place in the United States.
The Gunfighters and Daleks in Manhattan is about all we got.

To be honest, and this is nothing personal to the Brits, but i'm bored to death with Brit history.
If I never seen another Medieval, Renaissance or Victorian era Doctor Who set in England it would be too soon.

I've said it before and i'll say it again ......
Doctor Who has a very large American fanbase.
The producers should at least throw us a bone once every season.

I'd also like to see the subtle Anti-American hints in the New Series disappear.
                              We're not all overbearing warmongers.
