Now Star Wars has a leg up in the Trek Vs. SW arguement. Stupidest thing ever SW related. Is he trying to erase the memory of the Holiday Special? I could see a straight performance of the music with the movie played behind the orchestra, but wookie chorus lines? Seriously?

      >If Roddenberry had better health...tons of hardcore Trek fans would be saying the same thing about HIM in 2009.

Dunno if I'd agree here, since he was helming the old new Trek and everybody loved it. I think he'd got past the initial shock to the fanboys. (It was the series' that came after he died that folk weren't so happy with.)

      >Roddenberry didn't have that kind of control over Star Trek.

No, but he tried. And he did have a lot of the final say. (HE was the one that veto'd the Gorn book for the old RPG. *grrr*)

      >It's some sort of "nerd integrity" that I don't understand.

There's kind of a weird symbiotic relationship between the creator and hardcore fan these days. I think there's way too much pandering myself, too much changing stuff 'cos you think it'd sell, too much whining from the "serious" fans, and too much back-patting/excuse making afterwards.

THIS certainly ISN'T pandering.... And no, it doesn't affect my personal enjoyment of the old stuff. (If the Holiday Special couldn't do that, NOTHING will....) But I do find it a really weird bit of entertainment history. I don't think I'm gonna see it, and I really don't care what the fans or critics think of it; but I would LOVE to hear the real reasoning that went into it. Really; there's a huge jump from series of feature films, novels, comics, tv films, to Ice Capades. The pitch meeting for this must have been AWESOME!

Hey.... wasn't there a "Star Trek on Ice" show a few years back?

And we thought the 'Star Wars Holiday Special' was JUST a fluke..

Mr. Lucas is still channeling those Bob Fosse aspirations here… Cue the Music!

Seriously everyone, Mr. Rodenberry would NEVER have done something like this. Never. Nada. End of Story.

Now, Rick Berman on the other hand.....

          I don't buy that.

          Still...

It's kinda a losing propisition anyway though...because if he wouldn't...
personally, I'd think he (and people that'd think like him) take themmselves
          too seriously.

This new "idea" of Lucas' sounds like a fun tribute to the franchise.

Well, guys...I've got a friend on Broadway and they sent me a page from the lyric sheet. All I can say is, it's even worse than we thought. They made it into a madcap, screwball romantic comedy...

I've got a bad feeling about this...read on and see what I mean.

Han: "Well, Princess, I guess this is it, so don't get all mushy on me."
Leia: "You deluded laser brain, how can I miss you if you don't leave?"
Han: "Hey, your immenseness, I know you can't resist me/All the babes dig me/You know you wanna kiss me."
Leia: "I'd just as soon kiss a wookie."
Han "But you already kissed your brother"
Leia: "There was no intergalatic incestuous nookie."
Han: "Sure, like Oedipus just loved his mother."
Leia: "Hey, my planet exploded and Vader's my daddy..."
Han: "No wonder you have all these issues..."
Leia: "I still look good in metal bikinis..."
Han: "Made the fanboys bring out Lubriderm and tissues."
Leia: "You're half-witted and scruffy-looking, you Corellian pirate! You goon!"
Han: "Yes, but after this, I have a career! Luke will do voices in cartoons."
Leia: "I don't know where you get these delusions, laser brain, about jumping my bones."
Han: "Who would you rather be with? Mr. 'Corvette Summer?' or Indiana Freakin' Jones?"
Leia: "And I don't care, you nerf herder, how fast you made the Kessel Run..."
Han (interjecting): "Under 12.5 parsecs, baby..."
Leia: "Who cares? Jabba the Hutt's got a three-foot long tongue."
Han: "Yes, but I also hear Jabba's got bad breath, and Luke has the Irish curse."
Leia: "Well, at least nobody keeps debating whether it was them or Greedo who shot first."
Leia, Han, and a chorus of wookies and tapdancing fanboys: "We say it's Solo! Lucas says it's Greedo! Let's call the whole thing off!"

I paid good money to see The Last Starfighter The Musical in NYC. This couldn't be any worse than that.
