    Lost In Space talk

I love Lost In Space, even the nutty second season ... but I can't help but wonder WHAT IF the series didn't change after episode 5-ish.

Episode 1 through 5 were very Twilight Zone-ish ... and almost scary.
Smith was as bad as bad can be ...

If the series didn't change, do you think the original 1-5 formula would have worked ?
It's nice thinking YES ... but I can't help but think it wouldn't have worked.
Lost In Space episode 1-5 were dark, but they also had many elements of fantasy and pure non realist science.
If the series continued in this fashon, I think they would have eventually been laughed off the air-- even in 1965/6.
On the other hand, the new formula (campy) seemed to be almost as if THEY were laughing at us.

    I think it saved them.

    What do you think ?

I don't know what do you mean by being saved?

The show was pulled off the air way before its time regardless.

But yes...being campy gave it more wings...I don't think the first episodes would've attracted the large audience it did as a campy show.

I Love Lost in Space. If Lost in Space wouldn't of Changed I still think that it would have been Around for awhile. It would have been a way different show. The concept for the show was Just Amazing. Even though it Changed, I still Liked the Campy Stuff. That was one of my Favorite Shows when I was a kid. they would show Re-Runs every Saturday morning after all the cartoons were over. I just finished watching the whole series again about a Few Months Ago

"Ohhhh, the Pain!" As a kid I always wished that Dr. Smith had stayed more like he was at the beginning of the series, but now I like him the way he became. I think if it had stayed too serious, it would have lost (no pun intended) it's audience after the first season.
        It's all good!

          DANGER WILL ROBINSON

It woudl have worked but I can't imagine it would be the cult classic it is now. There were lots of sci fi shows that were dark but it's silliness made it memorable, The near pedoplhile Dr smith and the worlds most useless robot what could be better and Zorro is the leader of the group

The beginning of the Third season went back to it's original formula after Guy Williams complained about the Silliness of the Stories.he was promised better stories but unfortunately they went back to the Will,Dr.Smith and Robot formula stories that it killed the show. The last episode with the Vegetables was horrible.

Well you have to rephrase that question by stating, "What would LOS have been had Batman not come along?" That's the real question. The overnight success of Batman changed the entire landscape of television and suddenly everything had to be "in color" and not just any color, but "funky" colors. Next time you get a chance take a look at your standard Batman episode and then look at episode one (season two) of LOS. You immediate see the influence. This isn't my opinion, this is what Irvin Allen (producer of the show) indicated was the reasoning behind the dramatic makeover. Originally he had no plans to go color because he felt it was too expensive. But after Batman's over-the-top success, he felt he had no choice but to compete for that audience - Not only in appearance, but in approach, hence the comedic development between Smith and the Robot.
