I was 7 when i saw it and thought it was bad then (except for the animated segment) and in my childs mind hoped it was a kickoff for a Saturday AM series (it wasn't)

it's 2 hours of your life you can't get back and I have to admit I bought a bootleg and have wathced it twice in my life. even challenge of the superheroes the roast is easier to watch

I can't say it's better than Ep1 (I look at ep1 like top gun I just skip to the fights) but both are pretty awful

      Love the posted comments...:

"One day after this aired, 900 people died at Jonestown. Is there a correlation? You decide."

Actually, Jefferson Starship was also featured. Yet ANOTHER milestone for that great band, wasn't it...?

Is there any unearthed 'Director's Cut' footage of the Holiday Special featuring Shields and Yarnell or something...?

That would be pure GOLD, man..

It not that bad, They put worst on the TV. My copy has classic Star Wars Commercials on it. R2-D2 and C-3PO selling their stuff. Plus it also contains sences of Darth Vader on the Death Star and Tatootine that were cut from the first SW Epi V.

I'm the proud owner of a mint copy of the Holiday Special.
I wouldn't part with this for the world.
It's an important part of SW history.

I will then run away, breaking all Olympic records!

I saw it when it was first on and since it was Star Wars, I was oblivious to how sucky it was. Still, I was scratching my head at the long scenes of Chewbacca's family having conversations that I couldn't understand.

Looking at it now, yes it sucks, but it's wasn't really all that different from any other 1970's overblown variety special. One only has to look at The Paul Lynde Halloween Special to see that this sort of thing was not rare. The only odd thing about it is the subject matter (Star Wars).

There are at least a couple bootleg sources out there, one has a reporter always plugging a story about "frizzies at 11" to be shown on the late news. This was referenced in a South Park Christmas episode.

Also, in that magical scene with Bea Taylor singing to all the Cantina creatures, there was a guy in a rat suit from "Food Of The Gods". Rick Baker made the suit and worked on the Cantina scene in Star Wars.

Another Golden Moment in the special is Art Carney going through his Norton hesitation bit while signing something and the imperial guard (or whatever he was) says "WILL YOU COME ON!!" ala Jackie Gleason.

Actually it is Bea Arthur, You right, it is right up there with the Paul Lynde Halloween Special, (PLHS). I should know I just watch both of them last night. I found the PLHS on DVD at Best Buys earlier this year. It does have tin Conway, Billy Barty, Billie Hayes as her Witchiepoo/ HR Pufnstuf character and Margaret Hamilton as her the Wicked Witch character from Wizard of OZ. It also contain the first prime time television appearance of KISS, (Kids In Satan's Service) performing Beth, King of the Nighttime World and Detroit Rock City.
I am looking for a box to ship the stuff to you.

Yeah, I meant Bea Arthur. I got the PLHS because of KISS's appearance (and because I love overblown 1970's TV).

Yes, and I loved it! I have actually watched the Holiday Special about 10 times now because of Rifftrax. I actually enjoy it. I've tried watching it "cold", but I can't make it through. With the Rifftrax, it's pretty fun. The best part is the Wookie uh...adult entertainment...scene involving Itchy and his holographic woman.

I've gotten so used to it that I have the 4 songs from the show on my mp3 player, and I actually enjoy listening to them. I can't wait until George Lucas gets so desperate that he actually releases the Holiday Special on DVD. And then the Special Edition with new effects and added footage. I doubt it will ever happen, but I'd buy it in a minute. Sick? Yes.

Now that I know it's the anniversary, I think I'll watch it again. Rifftrax included, of course.

as long as star wars fans keep rebuying the films because of format and packaging changes he will never get that desparate.
the current version of 4-6 have now had 4 different dvd releases of the same 2004 versions of the films with recycled bonus materials (of course the 1 did have the proginal versions of the films), and to date none have had the original 98 special ed release
it had 4 different laserdisc releases (std, thx remaseter, defintive collection, and special ed 98)
and 3 different vhs releases (std, thx remaseter, defintive collection, and special ed 98)
