    >Carpenter's The Thing was much better than The Thing From Another World.

Really? I may have LOOKED better (and I've been told it's closer to the original story) but I think they're both very good. The original was the prototype for this sort of film, and I think it's tough for us to really appreciate it, since by the time we'd have seen the actual film we'd probably already seem a zillion clones. If I'm not mistaken, it was the first time we'd seen the "NO! We must try to COMMUNICATE with it!!!" character.

One thing I liked about the remake was that it could have been a sequel to the original.

      Yes...really.

As you mentioned, Carpenter's version is the more faithful version of John W. Campbell's sci-fi novella, "Who Goes There? than The Thing From Another World.

The Thing From Another World is basically a Frankenstein monster flick.

        Hmmmm....

I finally saw the tv ad for the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still," or as the ad made it seem "The Day the Earth Blew Up Just Like in Armageddon." I suspect the ad shows all the action scenes, and the movie is pretty talky. The original was. Hell; it's SUPPOSED to be! Gort looks like the T1000, and not a nekkid chick or robot skeleton like I was expecting. But a lot of what I saw doesn't bode well, like Klaatu telling the humans that Earth ISN'T our worlds, and them playing up the full scale invasion angle. Seems kinda far afield, given the underlying themes of the original.

Based on the ads, the buzz (running mixed to negative, although it does have some positive buzz) and the the shoehorning the movie into the current trendy Hollywood political causes, I'll likely be catching this someday on HBO.

I hear Gort is like eight stories high in this one.

Boy, not sure about that one. The 51 version works really well as a continuation of the Universal style monster movies. Different, and both good, but neither is better than the other.
